Announcements 12/15

1)  Christmas concert tomorrow night at 7 pm.  Free admission, everyone is invited.  Band students need to be there at 6:30 for warm-up.  Concert attire: no jeans, hats, guys wear a collared shirt, ladies if you wear a dress keep it conservative.

2)  Everyone is invited to bring finger foods for the reception immediately after the concert.  Bring them backstage before the concert begins.  We will have tables set up.  Everyone is also invited to stay and eat after we have put the tables back out for school the next day.

3)  The Final Exam this week is to play all 12 scales and the chromatic scale memorized.  We have been working these scales every day during class, so there is no excuse not to know them by now.

4)  A big "Thank You!" to everyone who helped out with the Breakfast with Santa.  It ran very smooth and was in my opinion a success.  It is great to do this as a fundraiser, but even more it is a just a small way to give back to the community that supports us.  Speaking of which...

5) Another "Thank You!" to all of those who brought canned goods for the Band's entry in the Canned Creation competition.  Please feel free to go to the main foyer of the school before or after the concert tomorrow night to see the creation.  Also, it is never too late to bring more canned goods tomorrow.  All of these will go to a good cause.

Milk and OJ for Breakfast with Santa

All of a sudden, we are in need of Milk, Chocolate Milk, and Orange Juice for the Breakfast with Santa fundraiser this weekend. I am asking the different sections to bring some to school either today after school, or tomorrow (Friday) so that we can have enough for Saturday.
Woodwinds - Chocolate Milk

Brass - Milk

Percussion and Guard - Orange Juice
You don't need to get the gallon size, just the Quart size of each drink. I really appreciate your help in making this a great community fundraiser!

B-Ball Concessions

Just a reminder that the Band is doing concessions at tomorrow's (Tues, the 10th) basketball game. Those who volunteered, you need to be there at 5 pm. If you can't be there at 5 pm, let me know.
We might need a couple of more parents if you are able to come

Dress warm

Meet at the school at 2:30 if you are riding the bus.  Everyone else, get to the Soul Harbor church by 3:30.  Yes, 3:30. I don't want to stand out in the cold any more than we have to. We will stay on the bus as long as we can.  I want everyone wearing gloves, including brass and percussion.   Everyone needs to wear as many layers as can fit underneath the uniform.

I know it's cold, and I know there may not be as many people out there as usual, but let's still go out there and get the community of Medina in the Christmas spirit with a good show!

Updates

As of right now, the parade is still on, and we are still planning on attending.  I will continue to keep an eye on the road conditions, and keep an ear out for any other news.

Also, the All-West Help Session that was scheduled at UTM tomorrow has been cancelled, and will not be rescheduled.

St. Louis Trip Refund

If you went on the St. Louis trip, we were expecting a $35 refund for everyone who paid to go. I now have that refund.
You will need to either come by yourself or get your child to come to the Band Room and sign by their/your name to receive the refund money

Announcements 12/1

1)  We originally moved our Booster meeting to This Tuesday at 6:30 to avoid conflicts with the school play on Thursday.  Now the 6th grade concert that was originally scheduled for last Tuesday has been moved to this Tuesday because of the weather last week.  That means we need to push the meeting to 7:30 (but still on Tuesday) and make it a quick one.  The main thing we will be talking about is the Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 14.

2)  Jazz Band meets this Monday after school.  It will return to Tuesday next week.

3)  For those trying out for All-West, I will need the $10 audition fee by the end of this week.

4)  We have afterschool rehearsal for the parade this Thursday.  It should be pretty quick.  The only reason to have it is to get the percussion in with the band since they are in separate classes.  There will be plenty of time for those that are in the play to get ready before show time.

5)  This Saturday is the parade.  We will have a bus here for those who need to ride it.  For those riding the bus, report time is 2:30 in the Band Room.  For those who can find their own way there, you will need to meet at the Lighthouse church at 3 pm.  You will need to take your uniform home with you Friday and show up dressed in uniform.  Instruments will be brought on the instrument trailer to the church.  All students will be wearing Santa hats.  Also, it is supposed to be cold Saturday, so wear something warm underneath the uniforms.

6)  Last Tuesday, we set up the annual Band Christmas Tree in the Band Room.  As we have done in the past, we will begin collecting canned goods to participate in the Beta Club's Canned Creation competition.  Bring in canned goods over the next couple of weeks, and we will be able to build a big creation, but more importantly do our part to help out those in need this holiday season.

Announcements 11/21

1. Remember that the Fruit is being delivered this Friday, Nov. 22. The students will unload the truck and sort the orders during the Percussion and Band classes, and they should be ready to start being delivered between 1:30 and 2:00. (It is going to be raining tomorrow, so it will be helpful for students to bring umbrellas and rain jackets to unload the truck.) You can come at anytime after that to pick up your order and start delivering them. I will be here in the afternoon for those who can't make it until after work. Please get this fruit picked up tomorrow so that it doesn't sit in the band room all weekend.

2. The Percussion Ensemble, the Jazz Band, and three small Band ensembles will be performing at the District Christmas dinner on Dec. 12 at 6 pm. Not all band members are a part of this ensemble. Ask your child if they are involved in any of these ensembles. If they don't know what you are talking about, they are probably not involved. But if they do know what you are talking about and are involved, they need to plan on meeting in the Band room at 5:30 and wearing all black. We will perform at 6 pm and be done by 6:20.

3. I talked to Thomas Tours today, and they will be sending the refund check out within the next week. So it will probably be after Thanksgiving, but I will have the $35 refund for all of the participants of the full St. Louis trip.

Fruit Delivery

The original date that we had wanted for the fruit delivery was today, November 13.  Unfortunately, the fruit will not be ready until next week.  Since they will also be delivering to 3 other schools in the area, it will be cheaper to deliver to all of the schools on the same day.

The fruit will now be delivered next Friday, November 22 at 10:45 am.  We will unload the truck during school time, get it organized into each student's order, and have it ready to be delivered to the customers by the end of school.  Please be prepared to pick up the fruit that day.  I will be at school that afternoon for those who cannot come until work is over.  But it does not need to set in the Band Room all weekend.

This fruit will be fresh straight from Florida, and in the past has been delicious!  It will be a welcome addition to any Thanksgiving meal that following week.

Booster Mtg and Friday night

1)  I am going to push back the Booster meeting to 7:30 on Thursday.  The middle school is having their annual chili supper from 5:30-7:30, and I know a number of you will be helping out with that.  So everyone go eat your chili and then walk on up to the Band room for the booster meeting!

2)  I am asking the band for volunteers to attend the playoff game this Friday night.  I am not making it mandatory, but if I could have 43 students sign up to go, we can take one bus and go support the team.  I had about half that go ahead and sign up today, and the rest needed to double check schedules.  I need that number finalized by tomorrow.  We would leave at 4:45 on Friday, and get back around 11:45.  We would only play pep music, and they would need to wear Band T-shirt and Khakis (like we wore at the beginning of the year) with warm clothing underneath.

3)  I am also asking for volunteers to play at the Food Giant grand opening this Sunday at 1 pm.  Again, they would wear Band T-shirts and Khakis, and would meet at Food Giant by 12:45.  I will have the instruments there.  I don't know why they chose this day and time to have the grand opening, but if you can make it, it would be a great opportunity to play for the community.

Announcements 10/27/13

1.  Everyone eat pizza on Monday!  Monday, Oct 28 is SGCHS Band day at PAPA'S PIZZA where 10% of earnings for the day will go to the band.  You can eat in, carry out, or get it delivered.  And while you're at it, go ahead and pick up one for lunch the next day!

2.  Remember to sell your fruit this week!  We need this money to pay for the charter buses that we are taking to state.  All money and order forms are due by Thursday.

3.  We will have our normal rehearsal schedule this week on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30.  No night rehearsals this week.

4.  This Friday night is Senior Night and 8th grade night!  Also, Mt. Zion church will present a 5th quarter in the cafetorium immediately after the game just for the band students.  They will have chili and/or soup to warm the kids up after the game so that they can go home with a full belly and get a good night's sleep for the State competition the next day.

Last minute details for the trip

1. Students will only have to pay for one meal - the one at Six Flags. They will eat at school on Friday, and every other meal is paid for. They will need money for that one meal, any snacks they may want, and any souvenirs they may want.
2. Students (and adults) can bring their luggage into the band room Friday morning and leave it there for safe keeping until the buses are loaded that afternoon. They are allowed one suitcase, and one carry-on bag (small enough to fit in the compartment above the seat.)
3. Make sure names are on everything! Stuff gets lost and accidentally picked up every trip.
4. Don't forget to pack for the performance: long black socks, band T shirt and marching shoes.
5. Pack for the weather in St. Louis: The forecast calls for highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s, and sunny skies with winds around 10 mph.

Thursday

After rehearsal on Thursday, we will need to take a few extra minutes to make sure that everything gets loaded on the trailers for this weekend. Students need to be prepared to help load something, and make sure that their instrument/flag gets loaded. The percussion will load the equipment trailer as usual, but we will also need help moving all the props and other equipment from the box truck to the other trailer we plan on using this weekend.
Also, if you are a chaperone this weekend, I need to meet with you Thursday at 6 pm if at all possible. It will only take a few minutes, and we can get this done while the equipment is finished getting loaded. I will give you the list of students that are assigned to you, and give you the list of chaperone responsibilities for the weekend. I will also need to get your cell phone number so that we can communicate when necessary throughout the trip.

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Water and Haunted House

1)  I am asking that students bring bottled water this week to replenish our supply for the next couple of games and contests.  Everything else at this Thursday's game will be taken care of.

2)  David and Doley Watlington are working a room for the Haunted House in Medina, and have asked for some help.  This would be a fun, easy fundraiser for us if we can get 4 to 5 people signed up each night.  The dates are October 17, 18 ,19, 24, 25, 26, and 31.  I realize that these fall on mostly Fridays and Saturdays, and while we are in St. Louis.  But if you just happen to be free any or most of those nights and are willing to work, please let me know.

Friday, October 4, 2013

Performance times

More performance times for you. We will be performing in St. Louis at 1:45, and will be performing at Crockett County on Oct. 26 at 7 pm. I will post the State competition time as soon as I find out.

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Announcements 10/2/13

1) I have received word that the contest this weekend will go on rain or shine. If it rains in the morning and then stops early afternoon, the contest will not have a finals portions, just a "one-and-done" competition just like the Crusader Invitational this past weekend. If it rains all day, we will simply go to the Gym and play while standing still for the judges.

2) Our tentative performance time at The Crockett County contest on Oct. 26 is 7 pm. That could possibly change slightly if a couple of bands are added, but it will be close to that time.

3) Band Booster meeting this Thursday. We will discuss the St. Louis trip, the upcoming Fruit fundraiser, and our plans for the next few contests.

4) Please get the money in for the St. Louis trip by the end of the week. If you are not sure how much more you owe, email me and I will let you know. Thomas Tours is insisting that we get this paid ASAP so that they can get the final arrangements made and paid for.

5) I want to thank the parents that helped out with the props this weekend. Two of the judges gave compliments on how the parents turned the props and fired the cannons without being noticeable. More than that complimented on how good the props looked. Everyone loved the cannons!

Saturday details

1) The food committee has asked that students who want to eat the lunch provided by the committee bring $5.00 to help pay for the food. This is cheaper than what you would pay for concessions in the stadium, but the students will also have the option to eat in the stadium for supper or any other time.
2) We will need to eat a snack as soon as we get there since we perform right at lunchtime, and will not get to eat lunch until around 3 pm. I am asking that Percussion and Guard bring water (a six pack of water is fine), Woodwinds bring a fruit (apples, bananas, oranges are good options), and Brass bring snack cakes (Little Debbies, etc). This will insure that all students get hydrated and something not too filling in their stomachs before we perform.
3) Parents who are going to be part of the pit crew (helping Front Ensemble, props, and Guard flags) are asked to wear their band T-shirts and jeans.
4) Students will need to wear their Band T-shirts underneath their uniforms. Also, a reminder that they will be changing out of their uniforms between performances so they need to bring a change of clothes (or they can wear light clothing under their uniform).
5) Our performances are at 12:25 and 8:25. Admission will be $10 for spectators. Pit crew members will get in for free.

Schedule for tonight

FYI:  Tonight's schedule for the football game will remain the same until further notice.  If there are any changes due to the weather, I will post ASAP on the email, Facebook page, and twitter feed.  Also, barring a miracle, it is very highly unlikely that we will be using the props tonight due to the rain.

Announcements 9/16/13

1) Report time for Friday is 5:15.  We will practice with the Middle school 8th graders at 5:30 for the joint National Anthem.  Homecoming activities will begin on the field at 6:30, and the game will start at 7:00

2)  I am going to need a few more parents from here on out to help with the halftime show.  I am adding the 4 props and the 2 cannons to the show this week.  If you can help out, please let me know and I will find you Friday night and explain what I need you to do.  I won't leave you lost and not knowing what to do.

3)  I am changing the rehearsal next Tuesday (Sept 24) to a night rehearsal from 6-8 pm.  This will give us a chance to have the parents practice with the props and cannons, and a chance for the band to rehearse on the actual football field before the first contest next Saturday.  If you could possible help out with the props at any point this year, please try to make it to this rehearsal so you can learn where the props go and how they fit in to the show.

4)  Seniors, remember that the videos and applications for the Scholarships at Division II State need to be postmarked by October 1st.  That gives you about 2 weeks to get this done.

5)  John and Heather Glenn-Hoekstra have begun to come to our school to give lessons to any wind instrument wanting to improve in private lessons.  They still have openings to give lessons on Mondays here at the school.  If anyone wants more info on private lessons or group lessons, please let me know.

6) David Watlington is running a room in the Haunted House this year, and has asked if we would like to help run it as a fundraiser.  This is something that we did a few years ago, but the Middle School has been running it since then.  They would need 4 or 5 people to help on the nights of October 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, and 31.  Obviously, this is during the St. Louis trip, a couple of football games and the Crockett County competition.  We would need parents who are not able to go to these things but would still like to help the band in some way.  If you are willing and able, please let me know.

Announcements 9/9/13

1. I put the wrong stadium name on the Itinerary for Friday night. The game is at UT Martin’s stadium, not Crockett County’s. (That’s what I get for trying to multi-task during inservice…)

2. The Grill-out sale ends this week, and all money and tickets need to be returned by Friday so that we can get the meat ordered for the grill out date on Sept. 14th.

3. I am assigning the Percussion and Guard to bring water for this Friday’s game. I will assign a different section every time we need water. This will make sure that we will have it for games and competition days.

4. Remember that there is a booster meeting on Thursday at 6:30. We will be discussing what is needed for the Grill out on Sept 14, logistics for the first competition on Sept 28, and other things.

5. A reminder that the last memorization test for the band is this Thursday over measures 237 – end. The last test (measures 201-237) was not easy, and a few more than normal received Incompletes on that test. They need to make it up in their own time.

6. The Gibson County contest schedule has already been posted, and we will be performing that day (Oct. 6) at 3:15 pm. Full Itinerary will come soon. I will post times of the other contests when I receive them.

7. You can also view last Friday’s field show as part of 101.5 full coverage of the football game. You will have to scroll through the game to get to our show. You can also view Chester County’s show as a part of this coverage. The link is http://www.citylinktv.com/archive/south-gibson-vs-chester-county-83013/

8. In case you forgot, the parents that are signed up for this Friday’s game are: Chaperones – Melissa M, Delynn W, Robin S, Pete S, Brenda G, Cheryl C, Anndrea D, Piper J, Vanessa K. Pit Crew – Roy M, Pete S, Greg G, Brenda G, Alan R. We are going to have 3 buses, and will need at least 2 parents per bus. Also, we have been needing 10 pit crew members that last couple of games, so if you can help out at halftime, it would be much appreciated!

Announcements 8/26/13

1)  We started the Fall Grill Out fundraiser today (formerly known as the Fall BBQ).  We will have the same menu: Chicken Halves - $6, Full Rack of Ribs - $20, Pork Tenderloin - $20.  50% of the profit will goes towards the student's trip.  I need tickets and money in by next Friday, September 6 so that we can get the meet ordered for the pickup that next Saturday the 14th.

2)  This Friday's itinerary is exactly the same as last Friday's.  6 pm report time and wear Band T-shirts and Khaki bottoms.

3)  Remember that next Tuesday's rehearsal is a 6-8 pm rehearsal.  Unlike the last one, this rehearsal was on the original calendar from May.  There is no school next Tuesday for students, so I scheduled this one as a night rehearsal.

Forgotten Detail

There is one thing that I forgot to ask for about tonight's game. We have pom-poms and water bottle lanyards left over from last year to sell. Beth Lit had reminded me before of this, and I thank her for that. I just let it slip my mind again!
Could I get 4 people to sell these items tonight? I will have two tables set up with two people at each table, and there will be a money box/bag at each table. Each table will be selling both items. Since the game starts at 7:30, we need to be set up by 6:30. We will pack up the tables in the middle of the 1st quarter when sales slow.
I really appreciate it. I will have a list of a few jobs available for the pit crew tonight, but otherwise, I need the rest of the parents to be official Band Cheerleaders. Your job is to stand and shout, clap, and cheer when we enter the field and when we hit the big push during the show. Thanks!

Pictures on Thursday 8/8

Crystal Burns from the Milan-Mirror exchange has offered to come take pictures of the band for a preview article that she is doing for the paper. She is coming tomorrow afternoon during the afterschool rehearsal to take the pictures.
I am asking that students try to wear a white top and khaki bottoms and tennis shoes. If you have a polo shirt, that is best, but a white T-shirt will also do for now since this is a last minute deal. Plain white is best, but again, since this is last minute, a little design or color will not be too bad. Khaki pants or shorts (you will need these for Saturday anyway.)
We will take a group picture, and then class pictures and maybe sectional pictures with instruments

Monday, August 5, 2013

Announcements 8/5

1)  As school starts this week, let me remind the freshmen that on Wednesday, you will not need your instrument, just a pencil.  But every day after that, you will need your instrument, music, pencil, and be prepared to go outside every day.  Bring a change of clothes that you can either keep in your locker or in your cubby in the band room.  I give time at the beginning of class for you to get changed when we go outside.

2)  Thursday is the first afterschool rehearsal from 3:30 to 5:30 AND the first Booster meeting of the year at 6:30 in the band room.  I will be giving lots of information about the St. Louis trip and many things about the first month of school.

3)  Remember that this Saturday, August 10 is the Meet the Hornets event at the stadium at 6 pm.  Report to the band room at 5:15 pm wearing your Tye-dye shirts from camp, khaki shorts or pants, and tennis shoes.  We will be playing measures 1-54 memorized, standing still for the crowd.

Thursday, August 1, 2013

Announcements 8/1

1)  Remember the rehearsal tonight from 6-8 pm.  We will be on the field, so dress accordingly.

2)  We will be going outside during class just about every day starting Thursday the 8th, so it would be a good idea to bring a change of clothes and shoes to put in your cubby.

3)  First Band Booster meeting will be Thursday the 8th at 6:30 pm.  There will be lots of info about the St. Louis Trip and upcoming fundraisers.

4)  I am looking at making the August 15th rehearsal a night rehearsal from 6-8 pm, and then doing the parent preview show at the end of that rehearsal.  That will be finalized at the booster meeting.

5)  Thank you to all of you who have paid your marching band fees.  I still need the rest who haven't paid to try your best to pay what you can.  We need all we can get right now to get things ordered that we need for the show.  If you are not sure if you have paid, just ask me and I will let you know.

Couple of notes

As we head into the final day of the most unusual (but awesome) week of band camp I have been a part of, just a couple of notes:

1) We will not have the preview show on Friday as we have the past few years. We will have the Parent Preview in the first couple of weeks of school. As soon as I can coordinate a day on the school calendar, I will let everyone know the date and time.

2) Remember the night rehearsals we have next week: Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8 pm. I am cancelling the rehearsal for Monday, August 5 due to Freshman orientation that night.

Mid Week Announcements

Finally made it a day without rain!  We missed it so much that we decided to make our own water fun with balloons and a slip-n-slide!  Thanks to the leaders for implementing their idea, and a special thanks to the drum majors for putting in a ton of work to get all the balloons and the slip-n-slide ready.

1)  Please continue to get Marching Band fees in ASAP.  The staff needs to get paid!  Make checks payable to SGCHS.

2)  This Friday, a couple of parents are going to be grilling hamburgers at lunch for those who want them.  If a student wants a burger and a drink, they need to bring $2 tomorrow so that the parents can go get the items.

3) Remember, Thursday is game night.  Students will have the option to stay from 4 to approximately 6 pm to play board games and such.  Bring your favorite card/board game.  Also, Friday is the Pool Party.  An information sheet was given out today about that.

Only 2 days left with nothing but sunshine on the horizon.  Keep up the good work and great attitudes that we have had all week!

Band Camp Days

I hope everyone is ready to start bright and early at 7 am at the practice field!  I am looking to continue the momentum that we successfully started last week.

The Leadership Team, in their desire to infuse a little fun and camaraderie into the full week of  Band Camp, have come up with fun theme for every day this week:

Bandanna Monday:  Everyone wear your favorite bandanna to rehearsal.  Any color, any design.
Tye-Dye Tuesday:  Wear your favorite Tye-Dye shirt to rehearsal.  If you don't own one, you can still buy one from the leaders for $5 (for cost of shirt and dye)
Water Wednesday:  Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, because after the afternoon rehearsal, we will slip and slide, throw water balloon, and otherwise partake in water mayhem.
Game Night Thursday.  Immediately following the afternoon rehearsal at 4 pm, have your favorite card or board games ready to play in the cafeteria.  Approx. end time is 6 pm, but we can go until we stop having fun!
Pool Party Friday:  Everyone is invited to attend the Pool Party at the Walgren household starting at 6 pm to celebrate the end of Band Camp!  More details will be announced about food and other info.

Also, just a quick note from the director:  For the safety of your children, we will never be outside when the Heat Index is 103 or higher, nor when there is lightning within 6 miles of the area.  I have an app on my phone that both I and the football coaches use that was made specifically to tell us the information about heat and lightning.

Band Camp 3

Part 3: Misc. Tips
1.  Just be prepared for it to be hot and accept that.  There are many, many bands across West TN that are out in the heat just like you, working hard in the heat.
2.  I will have coolers available to use for whatever you need.  I can't guarantee that they will have ice in them, but if you have a frozen water bottle that you want to keep, or some fruit snacks to eat during a break, feel free to use them.
3.  If you want to bring a canopy to use for shade, feel free.  There is plenty of room to set some up.
4.  Eat breakfast!  Fruit is best, greasy sausage and biscuit is worst.
5.  Put your name on everything.  Not because someone would steal it, but it might get lost in the hundreds of items that will be strewn about.
6.  Consider leaving your phones and other valuables at home or locked in a bag of some sort.  Phones are not allowed on the field!
7.  Be prepared to work hard when it's time to work, relax when it's time for a break, and have fun when it's time to play!
Go Band!

Band Camp 2: What to wear

1.  Cool clothing.  Shorts.  White T-shirts are best to reflect the sun.  Shirts MUST HAVE SLEEVES.  If you burn really easily, you might want to think about long sleeve shirts.

2.  Tennis shoes with socks.  We will be doing lots of marching and other movement.  No sandals or flip flops.  These will give you blisters and will not get you the best marching posture.

3.  Something on your head.  Hats are good.  I usually wear an old T-shirt on my head to protect my head and neck.  You can also pour water on it to keep you cool.

4.  Miscellaneous:  Frog Toggs, camel packs for water, water bottles to wear around neck, iced bandannas, sunglasses,  little fans you wear around your neck...

Remember, your best friends are Sunscreen, Water, and Gaterade!

Next time:  Miscellaneous tips to survive - and thrive - at Band Camp!

Band Camp: What to bring

1.  Sunscreen.  We will be outside a lot!  Please use plenty of sunscreen, and reapply it halfway through the morning.  Don't be stubborn and think you won't get sunburned!

2.  Water and Gatorade.  Water re hydrates, Gatorade replenishes electrolytes.  Bring your coolers. You can also have the small drinking coolers or bottles with you around your neck on the field while we are setting drill.  Please do not drink sodas, and absolutely stay away from "Energy drinks"!

3.  Your instrument and music.

4. Your lunch (2nd week only).  We will have lunch from 11:45 to 1, you will need to take care of your own lunch.  A light lunch is best (sandwiches, etc), fruit, candy is fine, and with plenty of fluids.  We will be spending the afternoons inside working on music, so you don't want to eat anything to heavy that will make you unnecessarily sleepy.

Next time: What to wear.

Updates

I just updated the site to include the Trailer and Truck sponsorship form.  It is on the right side of the side.  Also, there is a list of the Gold sponsors from last year that still have one year left on their sponsorship.  We don't need to ask them again this year.

Announcements 7/7/13

1.  We will be having our final summer rehearsal this Wednesday before Band Camp starts next week.  If you know someone who hasn't been there, please try to contact them and let them know how important it is that we as a band get a head start on the year!

2.  This Saturday we need welders.  We will meet at the home of Greg Graves starting at 8 am (or let us know when you can be there.)  We will be making four props and two new rolling uniform racks.  If you need directions to the Graves household, email me at southgibsonband@gmail.com

Monday, July 1, 2013

Announcements 7/1/13

1.  There is no rehearsal this week.  Enjoy your 4th of July and stay safe!  We will have our next rehearsal on July 10.
2.  If you know of anyone or any business who wants to sponsor the band trailer or the new box truck, pick up the sponsorship forms at the next rehearsal.  They are due back by the first week of school.  I will have the the trailer and truck ready for the first football game.
3.  If there is anyone who can weld or who wants to help paint, we will be having a work day on July 13th starting at 8 am at the home of Greg Graves.  We will be building the 4 props for the field show and 2 additional rolling garment racks for uniforms.  Contact me if you have any questions.

Announcements 6/18/13

1.       A reminder that Wednesday, June 19 rehearsal is from 1:30 to 4:30 pm for Band, Guard and Percussion.  The Leaders are going to a mini-Leadership Camp that morning.  (Leaders bring a notebook, your $25 if you haven’t paid it, and money for lunch on the way back to school. We will be leaving at 7:30 am for Crockett Co HS, so just get there around 7:15.  If a couple of parents don't mind driving, we might need you to carry a few of the students.  )  I am excited about this rehearsal in that we will be able to hear the first 97 measures with Band, Front Ensemble, and Percussion!  And might even be able to sneak in a few counts with the Guard routine.

2.       PARENTS:  We are putting together the list of volunteers to bring food to the staff members during the full week of Band Camp.  We will be feeding 10 staff members each day at lunch.  If you are interested in bringing a main dish, a side dish, and/or drinks please call or text Karen Blackmon at 487-3630.  Thanks to Karen for organizing this!

3.       Also, a reminder to the Leaders that we will be having a Leadership work day next Monday, June 24 from 9 am to around noon or 1 with lunch being provided.

Monday, June 10, 2013

Announcements 6/10/13

1.  A reminder of the 2nd summer rehearsal in June, this Wednesday, June 12.  Same times as last week (8-11 for Band, 1-4 for percussion and guard)  Be prepared to go outside for at least half the rehearsal.  Have your music and instrument!

2.  A CHANGE TO THE JUNE 19 REHEARSAL TIME.  FULL BAND, PERCUSSION AND GUARD FROM 1:30 - 4:30 PM.  The Leaders have been given an excellent opportunity to attend a leadership conference in Crockett County that morning with leadership teams from across West TN, so we will be pushing all rehearsal times to the same time.

3.  This from Mr. Inman for any musicians that are in FFA:  I'm not sure if you have any members of the band or chorus that are FFA members and would be interested in this, but National FFA is accepting applications for the National FFA Band and Chorus which will perform at National FFA Convention in Louisville.  There will be over 50,000 individuals in attendance at this event.

This is an amazing opportunity for an individual to participate in.  Just passing it along in case you had any that might qualify.  The applications are due July 1, and the website is listed below.

Saturday, June 1, 2013

Announcements 6/3/13

Hope everyone is enjoying a fun and safe summer.  I also hope everyone escaped the storms unscathed this past week.  A couple of dates for this week:

1. Wednesday, June 5.  Wind players rehearse from 8-11 am, Percussion and Guard rehearse  from 1-4 pm.  Please be prepared to spend some time indoors playing the music, and also some time outdoors working on the basics of marching.  Wear clothes and shoes that are appropriate for going outside.  Also, remember that for wind players, your goal was to have the first 35 measures memorized, and front ensemble members, your goal was to have the first 10 measures.  (I will have the final 2 front ensemble parts  for Matt and Harrison ready for Wednesday's rehearsal by the way).

2.  Monday, June 3.  Leadership team meets in the Band Room at 9 am.  Be prepared to do work indoors and outdoors.  Wear clothes and shoes appropriate for both.  It is my goal to be done by lunch.  Come in with ideas on how to improve this band and how to help it run more efficiently while still maintaining our goal of a family atmosphere.

Announcements 5/20/13

1. I will be updating the email list over the next week.  Please get your information forms in ASAP so that I can have updated information.  EVERYONE needs to turn in this sheet, even if you already did one last year.  (If you will not have a child in band next year but still want your name on the email list, let me know)

2.  Our first rehearsal of the summer is June 5 and then every Wednesday in June.

3. It's never too early to pay the Marching Band fees!  I am already ordering uniforms, instruments, flags, gloves, etc. for next year.  The fees are the same as they have been. These fees cover the previously mentioned costs as well as the Camp T-shirt, paying for the camp staff, the Drill, etc.  $150 for Band members and Drum Majors.  $175 for Percussion (the extra cost is to buy sticks and mallets.  $200 for Guard (the extra cost is for Uniforms and flag bags)
