Announcements 9/26/21

Congratulations to the Band on a well deserved victory this weekend.  You have been working hard and it is really appreciated!  This week be ready to learn more visuals, fine tune the music, and make some adjustments to the drill as we keep getting better!!!

1)  The Homecoming game is this Friday night.  We will be working up a song to put in the flip folders to play as the homecoming court is announced during the pregame.  Report time will be 5:45 so that we can be ready to be on the field at 6:15 for the Homecoming activities.  We will wear uniforms Friday night and put on a show for the home crowd and alumni!  This will be the first time they see our full show.

2)  Especially after this weekend, we are running low on water for the band to use for rehearsals and performance.  If anyone finds water on sale and can pick up some for the band, it would be greatly appreciated!

Announcements 9/19/21

I can’t thank everyone enough for coming together and making the 2021 Hornet Invitational a hugely successful event!  It took the effort of everyone involved in the SGC Band program to make this happen.  There were so many compliments from directors and others about the hospitality and organization of the competition.  For almost everyone involved, this was the first marching competition in two years, and I am so proud that we gave them a positive experience to kick off the 2021 season!

Now it’s our turn:  It’s Competition Week!

1)  We have two performances at UTM this Saturday: The WTSBOA Marching Festival, where we do not compete against other bands but instead receive ratings similar to Concert Festival in the spring.  That evening we perform in the Aviators Marching Band Invitational, where we will compete in the largest class of bands.  For those unfamiliar with how that works, most competitions, including ours, break up bands according to their size and have them compete against similar size bands.  The one exception will be the State competition, where they base their numbers on School Enrollment.  A full itinerary and more information about Saturday will be available Monday.

2)  Our football game this Friday against Henry County will be pep band only.  Their administration called our school and told them that due to Homecoming events during halftime, we would not have time to perform.  We are still going to go to the game and have a good time playing pep songs, but we will wear our Section T-shirts (we will wear the field show shirts Saturday) and khaki bottoms instead of uniforms.  We will also only need to take the small band trailer.  Report time will be 5:00 and we will leave at 5:15.

3) Speaking of uniforms, we will need to wash those things every week because you know they get nasty with sweaty people performing field shows in them!  Here are the basics: Band uniform jackets and pants can be washed in a washing machine with cold water and detergent with no bleach.  Hang up to dry.  Hand wash the gauntlets so that the Velcro lasts longer.  The Guard uniforms are more fragile and need to be hand washed and hung up to dry.

4)  Guard will have a rehearsal on Monday from 3:30 to 5.  We will get the rifle work to movement 2 done along with starting movement 4 work.

I can't wait until Saturday!!!!!

Announcements 9/12/21

This is a big week!  8th grade night, the Mass Band Jeep Raffle tour comes through Medina, and of course our biggest fundraiser of the year - the Hornet Invitational!

1)  We are going to wear uniforms at this Friday and Saturday night's rehearsals.  Guard: I am hoping those uniforms come in this week, but plan B is going to be the band polos that we wore for the football program pictures.  Band: You need to make sure to wear long black socks Friday night and have them to change into on Saturday night.  Underneath the uniforms, wear your section T-shirts on Friday night and your field show T-shirt on Saturday.  This will also limit what you can get at the concession stand during the Friday night 3rd quarter - water only, no condiments, such as ketchup or mustard, no pizza.  We want those uniforms to continue looking sharp!

2)  Report time Friday will be 5:45.  We will need to put on uniforms, get warmed up, then meet the 8th grade band to play through the National Anthem.  We will play pep songs with them the first half and show them what an awesome experience a high school game and performance is!

3)  Report time Saturday will be 11 am in the Cafeteria for everyone.  I will make sure everyone knows what job they are assigned, and then send off everyone one group at a time to get started.  Make sure you eat something before you get there, and for supper you can get something brought to you or eat at the concession stand.  Please try to car pool and park at the middle school so that we save parking at the high school for the bands and fans.  Parents if you have the field show shirt you can wear that, or wear anything South Gibson apparel or colors.  Otherwise dress comfortably for the weather.  Students will need to report to the band room at 7:00 to put on uniforms and warm up for the 7:45 performance.

4)  The Jeep that is being raffled for a Rose Parade fundraiser will be at SGC on Friday night and Saturday.  We will have a tent set up right outside the gate with raffle tickets for sale.  There are parents assigned to work that table on Saturday, but I need 3-4 parents to work it on Friday night.
