Announcements 12/11/22

1)  Our 2022 Winter Concert is Monday night at 7 pm in the Gym.  Students need to wear concert attire - no jeans, ties are optional, no certain colors, just look nice for the concert.  The pizza will be ready at 5:15 for students and pit crew/prop parents to celebrate the end of an awesome year.  Students will then need to be in the gym by 6:30.  It's going to be an awesome concert with performances from the band, percussion ensemble, color guard, and choir!

2)  Everyone is also invited to the middle school concert on Tuesday at 6 pm in the Middle School gym.  If you are able, be there to support our future band students as they continue to grow as musicians.

3)  A big Congratulations to our own Pashunce Carter for attending the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps auditions this weekend... and making it!  Awesome!  We look forward to seeing her perform next summer all across the United States on the DCI Tour!

Announcements 11/6/22

1)  Congratulations to everyone on a great season!  Thank you staff!  Thank you parents!  Thank you Band!  You all proved this year what it takes to be elite - hard work. Everyone worked so hard and had such great attitudes through it all.  I know it wasn't always fun and it wasn't always comfortable, but the memories and the friends that were made will last for the rest of your life. Marching Band is something you choose to be a part of when you get to high school, it is not required, and I am so glad you made that choice to be a part of this wonderful group!  Go Band!

2)  This Friday night the football team will be traveling to Haywood for the 2nd round of the playoffs.  I will be asking for student volunteers to go have a good time playing some pep songs to support our football team.  I am looking at taking one bus and the small band trailer to carry drums and tubas.

4)  Thursday will be regular 3:30 to 5:30 rehearsal.

Announcements 10/16/22

1) What a great job by the students on two show-stopping performances this weekend at Gibson County.  And a giant "Thank you" to the parents who work so hard at every performance.  I was so thankful for all of you yesterday that I made sure to pick a performance time in the finals that was late enough so you all could watch the end of the TN-Alabama game.  You're welcome!

2)  Two schedule changes you need to know about: This Thursday is a home football game so we are changing the Thursday afterschool rehearsal to Friday.  It will still be from 3:30 to 5:30.  On November 1, we are changing that rehearsal time to 6-8 pm.  We will be inviting guests like we did last year to get ready for state.  This will be a great starting point for State Week!

3)  On Tuesday, we have been asked to join the Middle school band to perform Go Big Blue to start their Concert at 6 pm.  We will play the one song with them and then you will be done.  We need as many as possible to be there so that we can get the middle school students excited about how awesome they will sound when they get to the high school!  I can understand work schedules, but everyone should be able to make it since we are already there for our normal 3:30 to 5:30 rehearsal (don't worry, I will be in my rehearsal clothes, too).  This includes Guard because I want them to see how awesome you guys are too!

4)  Brass, Percussion, and Guard sectionals will be on Monday

5)  Report time for Thursday's football game will be 6 pm.  We will be wearing the Cloaks and lights for performance for the home crowd!

6)  Report time for Saturday will be 8:30 am for Guard, 9 am for Percussion and woodwinds to get airbrushed, and 9:30 am for Brass to get airbrushed.  Detailed information about the Paragould contest will be posted on Monday.

Announcements 10/9/22

1)  Hope everyone enjoyed your Fall Break!  We hit the ground running this week as we look to keep improving every day, and I am excited to practice and perform in temperatures below 100 degrees!

2)  We will have our monthly Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30 in the Band room.

3)  Woodwind, Percussion, and Guard sectionals are on Monday.

4)  If you haven't already, please take your cloak and black uniform shirt home this week to wash before Thursday.  We want them to look (and smell) their best for Saturday!

5)  I don't have a schedule for Bandmasters at the Liberty Bowl yet, but if you or someone you know are planning on attending as a spectator, you can take advantage of this early purchase price that I was informed about.  "Bandmasters Championship tickets are now on sale! Save $5 when you use promo code EARLY. The offer expires on Fri., Oct. 14. https://bit.ly/22Bandmasters Skip the lines and save time. Download straight to your phone and scan at the gate"

Announcements 9/25/22

1)  Brass, percussion, and guard sectionals on Monday.  Regular rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday.

2)  We will not be attending the away game on Friday. Enjoy your fall break.

3)  After a long, hot day on Saturday, especially after you set the field on fire with your performance that night, your cloaks and uniform shirts might be a little... smelly.  Washing instructions for both the cloaks and black dri-fit shirts are: Wash in cold water in regular detergent (no bleach), hang to dry.  Also, prepare to wear your cloaks more often in after school rehearsals so that we can get use to marching and doing the visuals in them.

4)  I want to thank everyone for a great day on Saturday!  Parents, students, staff, all worked hard and toward the same goals to make the day happen.  Even though the results that night weren't exactly what we were hoping or expecting, there is no denying that we made an impression on everyone in the crowd!  The band PERFORMED Saturday night and put on an absolute show!

Sunday, September 18, 2022

Announcements 9/18/22

1)  Thank you to everyone once again for making the 2022 Hornet Invitational a success!  We hosted tons of bands and patrons from across West TN, filling up the stadium and the parking lots, and put on a show.  I have received nothing but compliments about the hospitality and the organization of the event.  You really outdid yourselves!

2)  We have the Union City contests this weekend.  The full itinerary and more information will be posted again tomorrow, just know that the report time on Saturday will be 7 am for percussion and 7:30 for the rest of the band.  For parents who have volunteered to help feed students breakfast on Saturday, try to have those items in the cafeteria by 7:50.  And Thank You in advance!

3)  Friday night is 8th grade night!  This is a great opportunity to let the 8th graders know how excited we are to have them join us next year and continue the tradition of excellence in the band.  We will play the National Anthem with them, play pep songs with them in the 1st half, and then perform at halftime with them as our special guests on the sideline.  Report time Friday will be 5:45 and we will be wearing the traditional uniforms with section T shirts underneath.

4)  *IMPORTANT* Mr. Price is a slacker and didn't realize the band was assigned to work concessions at the JV Football game tomorrow (Monday) evening.  I need 2 parents and at least 2 students to report to the concessions stand at 5:00 to work the 6:00 game.  We will not be grilling burgers - they will sell Sonic burgers.  So I will also need one of those parents to get the check from me at the concession stand and pick up the burgers from Sonic at 5:15.

5)  Woodwind, Percussion, and Guard sectionals tomorrow afternoon.  Regular rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.

Sunday, September 11, 2022

Announcements 9/11/22

1)  Hornet Invitational week!  I will be posting information throughout the week, but know that the report time for everyone will be 11:30 am in the SGC Cafeteria.  Please park at the middle school or the city park.  We are trying to leave the campus parking open for buses and spectator parking.  Students need to wear their show T-shirt and comfortable shorts and shoes.  It's supposed to be a warm sunny day on Saturday!

2) We need these donations by Friday so we can have them ready for Saturday:

Woodwinds – Coca Cola – pack of 12 oz. cans

Brass – Dasani Water – pack of16.9 oz. bottles

Percussion – Powerade – pack of 12 oz. variety bottles

Guard – Dr. Pepper – pack of 12 oz. cans

Rifles - Diet Coke - pack of 12 oz. cans

3)  Report time Friday will be 5:30.  Students will wear their Section shirts will khaki bottoms.

4)  Monday will be sectionals for Guard, Percussion, and Brass.

5)  Tuesday will be a night rehearsal from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  Students will wear their competition uniform during this rehearsal to prepare for Saturday's performance.  That uniform consists of marching shoes, long black socks, the marching pants, the black shirt they received last week, and the cloak they received last week.  Guard will be in their uniforms but with no makeup.  Be on the field at the beginning of the show ready to go by 6:30.  There will be no sectionals or rehearsals that afternoon before the night rehearsal.  This is also another chance for Parents to practice moving equipment, and we will have cloaks for those on the field for you to try.

6)  Regular rehearsal on Thursday.

Monday, September 5, 2022

Announcements 9/5/22

1)  I am planning on wearing uniforms this Friday night.  The temperature is supposed to be lower, so we will just need to luck out on the rain.  Guard will wear their uniforms ordered for the show.  Band, drumline, and front ensemble will wear the standard uniform (we will save the cloaks for the Hornet Invitational).  Shakos (hats) will be distributed this week, gloves will be distributed, and we will try on the uniforms one day during class to make sure we are ready to go.  If you ordered and paid for shoes, those will be distributed as well.  The one thing students need on their own is LONG, plain BLACK socks.  More information about procedures with the uniforms will be posted and talked about in class this week.

2)  Regular rehearsals this Tuesday and Thursday.

3)  Report time for this Friday's homecoming game will be 5:45 to make sure we have plenty of time to get uniforms ready to wear for first time, and to be ready for any pre-game homecoming activities that may pop up at the last minute.

1)  Brass sectional will be on Monday from 3:30 to 5:30.  Percussion and Guard also have their sectionals.

2)  This Thursday will be a night rehearsal from 6:30 to 8:30.  The plan is to have it on the football field.  That means we will not have the normal 3:30 to 5:30 rehearsal on Thursday.  We will have the 3:30 to 5:30 rehearsal on Tuesday though. (And Guard is working on a Thursday sectional to get some quality time on the practice field)

3) The Thursday night rehearsal is primarily geared toward giving pit crew parents a chance to learn what needs to be done at every performance as far as moving equipment and props.  If you are willing to help at any point this year, we invite you t to this rehearsal as we figure out the logistics of getting on and off the field.

4)  Report time this Friday is 6:15 pm.  We will be wearing our field show shirts and khaki bottoms.  We will perform the National Anthem, then perform our show at halftime.  You will have the 3rd quarter off to get concessions if you want any.  The game will be over at approximately 9:30.

Announcements 7/31/22

1)  Welcome back to school!  We are jumping in with both feet this week because we have our first performance at the Jamboree in 2 weeks!  We have afterschool rehearsal from 3:30 to 5:30 on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.  Remember to bring a change of clothes and your water so that you can be ready to go outside.  You can store these items in your cubby in the mornings.

2)  We have a band booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30.  It's a pretty big meeting as we get things going for this fall.  We will talk about the Hornet Invitational and the job list to go with that, we will have chaperone and pit crew sign ups for all of the performances, and we will talk about the fall schedule in general.  Be there if you can to get the full information about the coming Marching Season.

3) The Parent/Community preview night of the field show will be at 7 pm on August 18.  We will still have rehearsal that day, but will make sure the kids are fed before the performance.  More information about this event will be available Thursday at the Booster meeting.

4)  We are making two changes to rehearsals over the next month.  We will be having two night rehearsals so that parents can learn what help we need during the field show and practice doing these jobs.  This also give the students a chance to be on the football field at night to prepare for performances.  The two night rehearsals are August 25 (before the first home game) and September 13 (before our performance at our competition).  These rehearsals are from 6:30 to 8:30.  We will not have the regular 3:30 to 5:30 rehearsals on those two days.

Sunday, May 22, 2022

Announcements 5/22/22

1)  The school will be doing a sendoff tomorrow for three groups that are headed to the Spring Fling State Tournament - the Baseball Team, the Soccer Team, and three Track and Field students.  It will happen at 2 pm, and we will play a couple of our standard pep tunes and generally make some noise for these groups.  I realize that some of you will not be in school due to being exempt for exams, but you are more than welcome to come in and join us at 2 pm if you can.

2)  If you have not brought your uniform back yet, we need to get those in so that we can do the uniform inventory for this fall marching season.

3)  See you in a couple of weeks at our first Summer rehearsal on June 8 (June 7 for percussion).  Remember that you need to attend at least 2 of the 4 June rehearsals, and really at least 1 of the first 2. This helps us solidify the final exact numbers as the drill starts being written.   If you can make it to all four, that puts you even further ahead of the game!

Sunday, May 15, 2022

Announcements 5/15/22

1)  We will be looking at Field Show music this week.  Maybe even... starting to memorize it?!

2)  Bring your uniforms back!

3)  Thank you to the students who volunteered for the NHC Parade and gave up some of their time on Saturday.  We haven't been able to do that the last couple of years, but it's always something that is so rewarding to do.  You brought joy to every resident and worker there!

Sunday, May 8, 2022

Announcements 5/8/22

1)  Tuesday night is the Baccalaureate service for those who volunteered.  If you signed up, plan on being at Chapel Hill Church by 6:30 pm in Concert Attire.  There will be a door on the side of the church close to Chapel Hill Rd that we will enter in to store cases.  It begins at 7 pm and will done around 8 or 8:15.  We will play the Alma Mater while the seniors walk in, and that music will be passed out on Monday.

2)  Thursday is Graduation.  Be at the school by 6 pm wearing Concert Attire.  We will be on the field playing and will stay on the field until the end of the ceremony.  It begins at 7 pm and will be done around 8:15 or so.

3)  Saturday is the "parade" for the NHC Healthcare Center in Milan.  I encourage everyone to try to come to this (including seniors if you want) because it is for such a good cause.  These residents are physically unable to attend the local parades, so the administration there at NHC puts on a parade just for them with floats, groups, and bands.  We are the only band that is able to be there and perform for them, so I really want to bring the joy of being at the parades to them!  We will not wear uniforms, just wear comfortable clothing in South Gibson colors.  We will meet at the Ceco Door Products parking lot at 9:30 am.  The parade will begin at 10, and will be done around 11.  We will not have a bus so you will need to find a ride there.  I also need one parent to pull the small band trailer for percussion instruments and large instruments.  Let me know if you can pull the trailer.

4)  Please wash your uniforms and bring them back this week (especially Seniors!).  Use cold water, regular detergent with no bleach, and hang to dry.

Sunday, May 1, 2022

Announcements 5/1/22

2)  The Band Banquet is this Saturday at 6 pm for those that signed up to go.  It will be held a the Thomas D Dunlap conference center in Humboldt (the old hospital).  Turn in your $12 this week if you haven't done so yet.  We don't have a theme, we just ask that you come dressed up for a formal event as we look back on and celebrate a great year for the SGC Band!

3)  Band Booster meeting this Tuesday at 6:30 in the Band Room.  We will be finalizing plans for the Band Banquet, discussing opportunities we have for community performances the next couple of weeks, and looking forward to the summer and fall.

2)  Afterschool rehearsal for full band and guard on Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:00.

Sunday, March 13, 2022

Announcements 3/20/22

1)  Once again, the band should be proud of what they accomplished on Friday - all Superior Ratings in Grade 5 level music!  Don't ever take that for granted, that was not easy to do.  Your hard work along with your patience with putting up with your directors' high blood pressure is very appreciated!  Now we take aim at the Spring Concert and the upcoming parades.

3)  Color Guard Flag and Rifle clinic and auditions will happen on Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30.

Announcements 3/6/22

1)  Jazz Band will rehearse Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30.

2)  The date is set for the Band Banquet - Saturday, May 7 at 6 pm.  More details to come this week.

3)  We have 8 more rehearsal days until Concert Festival.  Since we are the only band in Martin attempting a Grade 5, we really want to play these songs well.  Come to class ready every day, engaged in rehearsal to improve on every rep.  This band has the skill to be the best sounding band at Concert Festival, but we have to do it, not just expect to do it.  Don't be spoiled by the success of our past, you still have to work hard to remain the best!

Sunday, February 27, 2022

Announcements 2/27/22

1)  Jazz Band will rehearse Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30.

2)  Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30 pm in the Band room.

3)  For those students who signed up for Solo and Ensemble, it's this Saturday at Northside HS.  We are not taking a bus, so you will have to find your ride there.  The scheduled time block for our school is 10 - 10:30 am.  Get there a few minutes early to warm up and park about midway down the parking lot in front of the school (you will see a group of other cars in that same area).  The directors will be there all morning helping run the event, so you will need to make sure you take your instrument home on Friday.  You can leave as soon as you are done performing.  Make sure to dress nice since the judge can see you at this event.

Monday, February 21, 2022

Announcements 2/21/22

1)  The Ensemble Concert starts tomorrow at 7 pm in the Gym.  Students need to be in place at 6:30 for warmup.  Concert attire - nice clothes, ties are optional - look nice for the concert!  I always look forward to this concert because the students learn so much in the process of preparing for this concert.  Time management, goal setting, self-motivation, working up music with their friends without having the director standing over them, and collaboration are just a few of the skills they put to use.  Can't wait until tomorrow night!

2)  Jazz Band will not meet tomorrow since we will be preparing the Ensemble Concert.

3)  On Wednesday we will go all in on Concert Festival Music.  Students need to come to class every day mentally prepared to be actively engaged in the rehearsal.  Concert Festival is earlier this year, so we really have to get a lot of things done in a shorter amount of time than usual.  There's no doubt in my mind you can do it with ease, you just need to have the right mindset in class every day.

4)  The Spring Fan Cloth fundraiser will begin this week.  Look for more information this week as we officially kick it off.

Sunday, February 13, 2022

1)  Butter Braid forms are due on Monday.  They must be turned in on Monday so that we can get them delivered at the assigned time.

2)  This Thursday is the 8th grade meet-and-greet rehearsal with the full high school band.  Last time we just did the leadership team so we wouldn't overwhelm them, but this time I want the entire band to be there so they can experience the big sound of a big marching band.  Even if you are not in class this semester, you are invited to come out.  This Thursday from 7-8 pm in the Band Room.  Let's get the 8th graders excited for the awesome experience that is the SGCHS Marching Band!

3)  Jazz Band will rehearse this Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30

4)  This is the final week of ensemble practice before the Ensemble Concert next week.  You need to buckle down and use your time wisely during class.  By Friday you should be able to start and end your song without a conductor.

Announcements 1/23/22

1)  Mass Band Uniforms (Top, Hat Wrap, Plume) need to be brought back to the band room.  All of the schools are going to collect theirs, and then we are going to take them all to the cleaners.  After that, we will store them for the next time we will wear them – whenever that might be.  Try to get those uniforms in this week.

2)  Jazz Band will meet Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30.

3)  This Tuesday during class, we will get our Yearbook picture taken for Concert Band class.  Look decent for the picture.  If you need to bring something to change in to, that’s fine.

Announcements 1/9/22

1)  Welcome back!  The snow gave us a couple of extra days to rest (and heal) up from the trip.  Now it's time to jump into the Spring Semester.  The dates for the semester have been entered into the Band app calendar, and there is also a hard copy in the Band room for anyone that needs it for work or other purposes.

2)  Since Mr. Johnson is still going to be out until at least Tuesday and we likely will still be missing some students again, we have decided to postpone the chair placements until Wednesday/Thursday.  We will review scales and practice sight-reading the next couple of days as well as selecting groups for the Ensemble concert in February.

3)  Anyone interested in Jazz Band, we will meet afterschool Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30 to introduce the ensemble, pick a weekly rehearsal day, and play through a couple of pieces of music.  Anyone is welcome to attend and find out more about it.

4)  Leadership team will have a special rehearsal this Thursday from 7-8 pm with the upcoming 8th graders.  We are inviting them to the High School band room to get them a little more comfortable with us and the school before they register for classes later this month.

5)  We are working concessions this Friday night at the Basketball game.  I need 2-3 adults and 3-4 students to work.  Get there by 4:45 if you can, but it's okay if you have to be a few minutes late.  We usually get done with these games by 9 or 9:30.  This is the only game we are working this year.

6) Any student interested in Memphis Honor Band needs to message Mr. Price by Monday morning.  That nomination list needs to be in by Monday afternoon.

7)  All West Auditions are this Saturday.  Students will need to find a ride there and back.  As soon as you are done auditioning you can go back home.  Results will be given later that evening.  We will go over procedures and other information this week during Focus time.
