Announcements 12/10/17

1)  Jazz Band Rehearsal Monday from 3:30 to 4:30.

2)  Concert Band Rehearsal Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:00.

3)  Winter Concert Thursday at 7 pm in the SGC Gym.  Free admission.  Concert attire - no jeans, conservative outfit for ladies, collared shirt for gentlemen with ties optional.  Report times - Jazz Band - 5:30, Percussion 6 pm, Band 6:15 pm.

4)  For those with Fruit orders, please look to see if you went home with an extra box of mandarin oranges.  We ended up one box short.

5)  We have been given on opportunity for a private screening of Star Wars Episode VIII Thursday night after the concert.  This is completely optional and is open to SGCHS Band students, their parents, and siblings 13 and over.  You will need to get a permission slip signed and find your way to the Humboldt Plaza Theater at 9 pm.  After a quick roll call we will start the movie.  Have the permission slips and money turned in by Wednesday.

Announcements 12/3/17

1)  Jazz Band will meet on Tuesday at 3:30.

2)  Band Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30.

3)  Looking forward to the end of the semester, keep the following dates in mind:  Monday, Dec. 11 - Jazz Band practice, Tuesday, Dec. 12 - Concert Band After school rehearsal 3:30 to 5:00, Thursday, Dec. 14 - Christmas concert in SGC Gym at 7 pm.

Fruit orders due

One thing that got left out of the announcements was the Fruit orders are due on Tuesday (tomorrow).   I need to get those things in so that we can get them delivered by Christmas Break.

Announcements 11/26/17

1)  Jazz Band will meet this Tuesday (not Monday) from 3:30 to 4:30.

2)  The scheduled Parade rehearsal will be this Thursday from 3:30 to 5 pm.  

3)  We will be working the Basketball Concessions stand this Thursday from 5 to 9 pm.  I already had some parents sign up at the previous Booster meeting and I will be asking for 4 student volunteers this week.

4)  The Breakfast with Santa fundraiser will be this Saturday from 8 to 10 am.  I will have tickets on Monday for Band students to sell.  I will be asking for about 15 student volunteers to work.  Report time for workers will be 6:30 am and we will be done by 10:30.  For everyone else who is not working, I am asking for the following donations to be turned in by Friday:  Woodwinds: Plastic knives, spoons, styrofoam cups and/or plastic cups.
Trumpets and French Horns:  Half gallon sizes of White milk
Low Brass: Half gallon sizes of Orange Juice
Percussion: Half gallon sizes of Chocolate milk
Guard: Candy canes
Drum Majors: Parchment paper

5)  The Christmas parade is this Saturday.  We will meet at Soul's Harbor Church at 3:30 and the parade will start at 4 pm.  You will need to find a ride there and you will need to get your uniform and instrument there.  We will be taking the small band trailer for the drums and Sousaphones.  It will be parked by the Elementary school by 3 pm.  Wear uniforms and Santa hats - plain red and white with no writing on the hats.

Announcements 11/19/17

1)  Jazz Band will meet on Monday.   Please wear concert attire to practice so that Mrs. Walton can take the picture of the Jazz Band for the Yearbook.

2)  Keep selling the Fruit this week.  It will be due back next week, November 28.  

3)  Start working on memorizing the parade music.  The parade will be the Saturday after Thanksgiving Break.  It will arrive quickly!

Announcements 11/12/17

1)  Yankee Candle orders are due Monday, November 13.  Yankee Candle will charge us a late fee for any orders that come in after this day.  Online orders are not affected by this, the online orders will simple stop accepting new orders after Monday.

2)  Jazz Band will meet 3:30 to 4:30 on Monday.  If you are interested in playing a different style of music, come join us!

3)  Students auditioning for All West Orchestra this Saturday will need to find their way to the audition.  It is at Briarcrest Christian School outside of Memphis.  Make sure your map application is taking you to the high school/middle school.  The elementary school is in a completely different place.

Announcements 11/5/17

1)  The Fruit sale will begin later this week.  Also remember that the Yankee Candle forms are due back by November 14.

2)  Jazz Band will start next Monday, November 13.  This is for anyone who is interested in playing a different kind of music and can meet every Monday after school from 3:30 to 4:30.  

3)  I want to thank all the students and parents for a great marching season!  It was hot, it was cold, there were some long days, and there was a lot of hard work.  But boy did we make some memories!  I could not ask for a better parent booster group.  I could not ask for a better group of kids.  From the bottom of my heart - Thank you!

Announcements 10/29/17

1)  Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30.

2)  We will begin the Yankee Candle Fundraiser this week.  The profits from this fundraiser will go directly to each student's individual trip account.  The orders will be due back by November 14.

3)  Report time for the Home Football game this Friday will be 6 pm.  

4)  Report time for Division II State competition on Saturday is 7:30 in the Band Room.

Football game

Due to the rain that will be coming in tonight, unfortunately the Band will not be attending.  I am making the decision early so that those who still want to go can plan on rooting the team on.  I encourage everyone who can to attend the game.  It is an important game in a lot of ways, not the least of which a win gives us a home playoff game!

Itinerary for Division II State Championship

Stewart’s Creek High School, Smyrna, TN

Saturday, November 4th, 2017

 

7:30 am                Band report to band room.  Go to the restroom before we leave!

8:00 am                Depart SGCHS.  Make sure you have your hat box, gloves, long black socks and shoes.

10:30 am             Arrive at Stewart’s Creek High School.  Equipment will need to be unloaded.  Pit trailers and props will be put together.  Snacks will be provided.  You may go watch some bands.  Use this time also to go ahead and start focusing on your musical and visual aspects of the performance.  We must be at our best to make finals!

11:50 am             Group stretch, Breathing exercises, and Fundamentals.

12:10 pm             Start putting on uniforms and getting instruments.

12:35 pm             Line-up and travel to warm-up.   

12:45 pm             Warm- up.  During this time there is to be no talking. 

1:15 pm               Travel to Stadium.  Keep your chin up and shoulders back the entire time.  Do not talk.  Focus on the upcoming performance. 

1:30 pm               Perform.  Don’t try to do anything special, simply perform what you know.

1:50 pm               Arrive back at bus.  Change out of uniforms, put instruments in cases.   At 4:00, the seniors will meet with the directors at the buses to go to the field.

4:15 pm               Recognition of Judges, Announcements of Scholarship participants and Finalists. 

4:45 pm                Gather at the buses where you will be given the itinerary for the evening performance. Finals performances are based on random draw.  We will not know the order until 4:45.

7:00 pm               Finals performances start. 

10:00 pm             Awards and Final placements.  We will load the buses as soon as these are over.

11:30 pm             Depart Stewart’s Creek High School.

2:00 am                Arrive SGCHS.  After everything is put up properly, we will be dismissed together.

Announcements 10/22/17

1)  Report time for Friday will be 5 pm.  We will depart at 5:30 pm for Milan.  Anyone who is taking the ACT on Saturday is allowed to leave after halftime as long as I have a note saying who you are riding home with.

2)  Report time for Saturday is 1 pm at the Practice field, with the exception of those students who are taking the ACT.  We will depart for Dyer County at 2:45.

3)  As we hit the homestretch of the Marching Season, we need to focus on DETAILS!  Be mentally prepared and ready to improve every day these next two weeks as we get away from the same old bad habits and reemphasize the fundamentals of marching and musicianship.  Everyone is a starter!  Everyone is important!  Everyone must step up!

Saturday, October 28th, 2017

 

1:00 pm               Report to Practice field with instruments.  Students who are taking the ACT are exempt from this rehearsal.

2:00 pm               End Rehearsal.  Load instruments and equipment, use restroom, eat snacks, load buses.

2:45 pm               Depart SGCHS.

4:00 pm               Arrive at Dyer County High School. Unload instruments.  You have this time to go in and watch bands.  Do Not Travel Alone.  Don’t eat too much while you are in the stadium. 

5:35pm               Put on uniforms, get instruments.           

5:55 pm               Line-up and travel to warm-up.   

6:05 pm               Warm- up.  During this time there is to be no talking. 

6:35 pm               Travel to Stadium.  Keep your chin up and shoulders back the entire time.  Look proud!

6:45 pm               Perform.  Don’t try to do anything special, simply perform what you know.

7:00 pm               Put instruments in cases.   After you get out of uniforms, you may go inside and eat.  Leaders be at the field ready to go on for awards by 7:55.

8:00 pm               Awards Ceremony.  We will clap and support everyone as the awards are handed out.  There will be absolutely no booing or loud negative responses. 

9:15 pm               Depart Dyer County High School.

10:30 pm             Arrive at SGCHS.  Everyone will be dismissed once everything is put away properly.

10:00 am             Be on practice field for a short rehearsal.  Beginning of the show.  ACT Participants are not required to be a part of this rehearsal.

11:00 am             Eat lunch and load trailers.  We will be grilling burgers for lunch for all the students. 

12:00 noon         Depart SGCHS. 

2:00 pm               Arrive at Liberty Bowl.   Eat some snacks since you won’t be able to eat supper until after we perform.  Props and pit trailers will need to be put together during this time.

3:15 pm               Get Uniforms on and get instruments out.

3:45 pm               Line-up and travel to warm-up.   

4:00 pm               Warm- up. 

4:30 pm               Travel to Stadium.  Keep your chin up and shoulders back the entire time.  Look proud!

4:45 pm               Perform.  Don’t try to do anything special, simply perform what you know.

5:45 pm               Take off uniforms, load instruments.   Pizza will be served when all trailers have finished being loaded.  You may go inside and watch some other bands until the awards ceremony.  Leaders need to meet at the buses at 9 pm to put uniforms on.

9:45 pm               Awards Ceremony.  We will clap and support everyone as the awards are handed out.  There will be absolutely no booing or loud negative responses.  After awards, get on buses and prepare to leave after roll is called.

10:45 pm             Depart Liberty Bowl.

12:45 am             Arrive at SGCHS.  After all instruments are unloaded and put in their proper place, you will be dismissed.

Announcements 10/15/17

1)  Thank you to everyone who helped out Saturday at the Hornet Invitational.  The event went spectacularly with everyone working together all day.  I cannot express how proud I am to have such great students, awesome parents, and even alumni who helped out!  You all made the day a success!

2)  Home football game vs. Craigmont this Friday.  This will be Senior night, so parents of seniors need to be ready to dress nice and escort your child onto the field during the pregame.  Report time will be 6 pm.  Seniors and senior parents, once there is a schedule for the pregame I will let you know.

3)  Bandmasters at the Liberty Bowl this Saturday.  Our performance time is 4:45, and I will have a full itinerary posted on Monday.

4)  The second payment for the Atlanta trip was listed as due Sunday, October 15.  As long as you get the money in this week, it will be fine.

Announcements 10/8/17

1)  All Hands On Deck!  The Hornet Invitational is this Saturday!  The report time for everyone will be 11:30 am.  I will meet with the students for a few minutes in the Cafeteria and then with the parents in the Band room.  The first bands should be arriving between 1 and 1:30.  Please wear your 2017 Field Show T-shirts or your pit crew polos.  Or you can wear other South Gibson attire if you do not have the first two.

2)  Booster meeting this Tuesday at 6:30 pm.  We will cover all the job assignments and job descriptions for Saturday.  Be there if you want to learn more about what you will be doing Saturday.

3)  This Friday's home game is also 8th grade night.  Report to the band room at 6 pm and be ready to warm up with the 8th grade outside at 6:15.  They will perform the National Anthem with us and play pep songs during the first half.  

4)  We will still have our regular Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals as we prepare for the Bandmasters at the Liberty Bowl.

5)  We are planning on having our pictures for the yearbook made on Tuesday during class.  Make sure you have your uniform at school.

Announcements 9/24/17

1)  I need a handful of parents to help put the casters on the instrument carts and a couple of people who can sew to slightly modify the Field Commander Gauntlets.  We will meet at 6:30 on Tuesday.

2)  Report time on Friday will be 4:45.  We will leave for McNairy as close to 5:15 as we can, with the understanding that some parents will need to come from work before we can depart.

3)  I posted the itinerary for the Gibson County contest last week, just remember that the report time for Saturday is 9:30 am and it will be another all day event.  I am sincerely looking forward to the challenge of pushing our limits this week as we prepare to take giant leaps forward with our show with long awaited feedback from judges!

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

9:30 am                Report to Practice field with instruments.

11:45 am             Arrive at Gibson County. Loading crew will unload.  Props and trailers will be assembled.  Use the extra time to go in the stadium, eat lunch, and watch bands.  Do not travel alone! 

1:45 pm               Put on uniforms.  Get your instruments.

2:10 pm               Line-up and travel to warm-up.   

2:20 pm               Warm- up.  During this time there is to be no talking. 

2:50 pm               Travel to Stadium.  Keep your chin up and shoulders back the entire time.  Look proud!

3:00 pm               Performance.

3:30 pm               Arrive back at bus.  Put plumes back in plume box, put instruments in cases, put uniforms up properly.  Leaders will keep uniforms on for Awards.  Make sure you are back in the stadium by 3:45.

3:45 pm               Awards Ceremony and announcements of finalists.   

Performance time for Finals is based on Random Draw.  A schedule for Finals performance will be

announced at the buses following the Awards Ceremony.

9:15 pm               Finals Awards Ceremony

10:00 pm             Load equipment and buses.

11:15 pm             Arrive at SGCHS.

Announcements 9/17/17

1)  Report time this Friday will be 5:45 pm.  I posted the itinerary last week for the Liberty Contests on Saturday.

2)  No design team meeting this Tuesday.

3)  We are still taking donations of snacks and water for the upcoming games and competitions.  We always do a good job of keeping the students hydrated on these hot days because of these water donations.

4)  If you are working the pit crew this Friday, plan on wearing black shirts and jeans.  At the competition on Saturday, plan on wearing black pants and black shirts (the pit crew polos if you have them).  You are more than welcome to change out of these clothes after we perform. 

5)  Students, you will be wearing your white band shirts and shorts underneath your uniform on Saturday.  You can bring a change of socks and shoes to change into after we perform.  Also, you will need to bring money for concessions to eat lunch and an early supper at Liberty.  

6)  If any parent(s) are willing, we would love to have some fruit to feed the students after we get done with our 8 am Saturday morning rehearsal.  We will finish at 8:45 am and I will have some tables down there at the field ready.  Let me know if you want to help with this and I will get everyone on the same page.

Liberty Contest Itinerary (Sept. 23)

Saturday, September 23rd, 2017

 

8:00 am                Be on SGC practice field with instruments for a short rehearsal.  Beginning of the show.

9:00 am                Load instruments, use restroom, get on bus. Make sure that you have any money that you might need, black socks, your instrument, and clothes to wear when you change out of uniform.   

9:30 am                Depart SGCHS.

10:00 am             Arrive at Liberty. Leaders will unload the trailer.  Eat snacks and drink water while props are being put together. I encourage you to go watch some bands, also.

11:05 am             Start putting uniforms on.

11:35 am             Line-up, receive plumes and travel to warm-up.

11:45 am             Warm- up in area A.

12:05 pm             Travel to Stadium.  Keep your chin up and shoulders back the entire time.  Look proud!

12:15 pm             Perform.

12:30 pm             Arrive back at bus, put instruments in cases.  Seniors will keep uniforms on to accept trophies, and go immediately back into the stadium for awards. Everyone else, get out of your uniform and go back into the stadium.  Everyone must be back inside the stadium by 1:15 for awards. 

1:30 pm               Award Ceremony.  We will clap and support everyone as the awards are handed out.  There will be absolutely no booing or loud negative responses. 

 

* We will have to leave the stadium and come back in between the contests so the workers can clean the stands for the evening competition. We will use this time to relax in the parking lot.

 

3:30 pm               Evening contest begins.  You can go into the stadium and watch bands/eat concessions.  Do not travel alone!

4:20 pm               Start putting uniforms on.  This means that at the latest you will have to leave the stadium after Northside performs.

4:50 pm               Line-up, receive plumes and travel to warm-up

5:00 pm               Warm-up in area B.

5:20 pm               Travel to Stadium. Keep your chin up and shoulders back the entire time.  Look proud!

5:30 pm               Perform.

5:45 pm               Arrive back at bus, put instruments in cases.  Leaders will keep uniforms on to accept trophies, and go immediately back into the stadium for awards. Everyone else, get out of your uniform and go back into the stadium.  Everyone must be back inside the stadium by 6:15 for awards. 

6:30 pm                Awards Ceremony begins.

7:30 pm               After awards we will take uniforms off, load instruments and props, and clean up the area around our bus.  After all this is done, we will load the buses and go home.

8:30 pm               Arrive at SGCHS.  Everyone will help put the equipment in the correct place.

9:00 pm               After everything is put up correctly, the band will be dismissed to go home.

Announcements 9/10/17

1)  Design team will meet Tuesday at 6:30 to finish the skirts and guard barriers.

2)  We are asking for donations of bottled water again as our supply is running out.  We will  need a lot as we start going to competitions in a couple of weeks.  The water donated since band camp has gone a long way as students have been using it to stay hydrated during after school rehearsals!

3)  This Thursday's rehearsal will be from 6:30 to 8:30 pm instead of 3:30 to 5:30.  This is a special rehearsal designed for parents to get experience with pit crew and props logistics.  If you would like to help out with the pit crew and/or on-field props, please plan to attend this rehearsal so that you can find a place to help out in the 2017 field show!

4)  We will be wearing uniforms for the first time this Friday night at the football game.  Make sure you get some plain long black socks and band members will need to purchase gloves for $2.  Wear the band T-shirts underneath.  No jewelry, makeup, or nail polish is allowed while in uniform.  Hair must be tucked into the hat.  I am also limiting the concessions menu as we want to preserve our uniforms.  Water only, burgers or hot dogs with no condiments, nachos with no cheese.  Please do not try to sneak any other drinks besides water or any condiments on the food.  There is a good reason why I limit the menu and I ask that you follow the guidelines I have given for food.  

5)  Report time for Friday night will be 5:45 pm.

5:00 pm – Report to Band Room.  Attire is Band T-shirt and Khaki bottom.  No hats.  Use Restroom and load up on to your assigned bus.  Chaperones will call roll.

5:30 pm – Depart SGCHS.

6:15 pm – Arrive at Crockett County’s Stadium.  Leaders will unload the cases.  Get your instrument case and line up.  We will march in with cases and unpack when we get to the stands. 

7:00 pm - Game Begins.  Pay attention to the game, cheer for the team, act in a professional manner.  Be ready to play pep songs at any time.  NO CELL PHONES!  During the 3rd quarter, you will be able to get concessions. 

9:45 pm - Approximate end of game.  Line up and march back to buses.  Take your instruments to the truck to be loaded and then load the buses.

10:30 pm - After all equipment is loaded and students are on their assigned bus, we will depart.

11:00 pm – Arrive at SGCHS.  After instruments are put up properly, you will be dismissed as a group.

2)  Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30 pm.  There will be more information about the Atlanta trip and we will start preparing for competition season.  We will also be talking about our own competition - the Hornet Invitational!

Football game

I just got word from Coach Stidham that the game is still on for tonight at 7 pm in Bolivar.  We will perform our show as planned.  Report time is 5 pm.  There is no rain forecasted for tonight, but I would not wear good shoes as it will probably be muddy.
