Announcements 11/28/21

1)  Full Band afterschool rehearsal on Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 to prepare for the Christmas Parade.

2)  Christmas Parade is Tuesday at 6 pm.  The Band will meet in the Parking Lot at Gracepoint Bible Church (formerly Soul's Harbor Church) at the start of the parade route (S Main Street right off Hwy 45).  You need to be there by 5:30.  Also, we will not be taking a bus, so you will need to find your own way there. The small band trailer with large instruments will be parked at the old Elementary school parking lot at the end of the parade route.  If you need to get your instrument out of the trailer, you need to plan to get there early so that you can work your way to the meeting place after you get your instrument.  Students will be dismissed as soon as we reach the end of the parade route.

3) Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30 pm.

4)  The second Mass Band Rehearsal for the Rose Parade is this Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm.  More details to come this week.

Announcements 11/21/21

1)  Great job and a big Thank You to everyone involved in Saturday's Mass Band Rehearsal!  Students, you exceeded the Directors' high expectations of how you worked together as a Mass Band and how you held up during the first 2 mile hike while playing non stop!  Parents who helped organize and serve the lunch - you all are beyond awesome!  We still need to pay a the people back for the money they spent getting this lunch together, so if you were unable to get your donation in last week, please bring your $5 this week so they can be reimbursed.

2)  Monday night at 6 pm in the Band Room there will be an informational meeting for current percussion members and anyone interested in trying out for the 2022 Drumline and Front Ensemble.

3)  Not much going on this week, but make sure you remember that next week we have a Monday afterschool rehearsal from 3:30 to 4:30 to prepare for the Parade, and then have the Parade next Tuesday night.

Announcements 11/14/21

1)  First Rose Parade rehearsal is this Saturday at Milan's Football Stadium.  Be there ready to go by 9 am.  More details about the rehearsal will be given in the Rose Parade group in the Band app.

2)  Each of the high schools in the Mass Band will provide lunch for the students at a specified rehearsal.  Our time to feed the mass band lunch is this first rehearsal.  We have some parents making soup and sandwiches, but we also need donations to be able to feed these 300 students.  So here is what we are asking from those students going on the Rose Parade trip:

Brass: 12 pack of Coca-cola cans OR at least a $5 donation to help pay for the food.

Woodwinds: 12 pack of Dr. Pepper OR at least a $5 donation to help pay for the food.

Percussion and Guard:  A case of water (it doesn't matter the brand) OR at least a $5 donation to help pay for the food.

3)  We will also need some desserts, so if you are willing to make a dessert and cut it into servable sizes, please send a message to Mr. Price.

4)  MEMORIZE - we have the Christmas Parade in 2 weeks, we have the first Mass Band Rehearsal that we need to have the Rose Parade music and the Rose Bowl Field show - Beginning to G - memorized for, and there are still many students who have not completed their memorization tests from the first semester that can still get those done.  Such is the life of being a marching band member!  But remember that the payoff is so worth it!!!

5)  The Laundry detergent from the last fundraiser will be delivered early this week.

Announcements 11/7/21

1)  Whew!  It's been a while since I was so physically and emotionally drained.  But what a weekend!  History was made in the SGC Band but most importantly we had a perfect ending to such a special season.  This post would not hold the words I have for the love and appreciation I have for everyone involved in this awesome program!

2)  There are no rehearsals this week, no sectionals. We do have a home playoff game though, but it will be a volunteer pep band performance.  I will have a sign up sheet for any band and guard member who wants to play and cheer on the team Friday night at SGC.  Report time will be 6:15 for those that sign up and the attire requirement will be to dress warm!

3)  This will be a week of transitions.  We will be setting placements for concert band with chair auditions as we prepare for the Christmas Concert.  We will be begin working on music and guard choreography for the upcoming Christmas Parade.  And Rose Parade participants will be receiving music for the upcoming rehearsals.  But first - we clean the band room!!!

Announcements 10/31/21

1)  State Week!  We are looking forward to some frighteningly good rehearsals this week!

2)  Percussion will have their sectional Monday at the regular time.  It's scary how hard these guys work!

3)  Tuesday's rehearsal will be from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, not immediately afterschool. Don't be afraid of the dark though, we will have stadium lights on!   We will have some special guests come in to give feedback and we will be feeding these guests immediately after the rehearsal to thank them for their time.  We have all the food lined up except for drinks.  Could we get some tea made for Tuesday night?  Also, more details will come on Monday.

4)  Thursday's rehearsal will be from 3:30 to 5:30 as normal.    Something normal the week of State?  Is this a Trick or a Treat?

5)  Thursday night will be a Booster meeting at 6:30 pm as we answer any questions and quell any fears about the State competition as well as look at the activities in November/December.

6)  Friday night will be a home playoff game.  We will treat it like any other home game - play the National Anthem, pep songs, perform the full halftime show as a practice run before State, and come back and play pep songs in the 4th quarter.  At least it's not Friday the 13th!

7)  Saturday = State! We will report at 5:45 am to load up on the buses and depart at 6:15.  An updated itinerary will be available Monday or Tuesday as we look at making a couple of changes to the late morning.  It all leads to 1:48 pm, when we bring terror to the rest of the bands!  More information about state will be given this week but can also be found at https://www.tnsmbc.com/

Please bring something warm to wear in between performances because it is going to be cold Saturday!

Announcements 9/19/21

I can’t thank everyone enough for coming together and making the 2021 Hornet Invitational a hugely successful event!  It took the effort of everyone involved in the SGC Band program to make this happen.  There were so many compliments from directors and others about the hospitality and organization of the competition.  For almost everyone involved, this was the first marching competition in two years, and I am so proud that we gave them a positive experience to kick off the 2021 season!

Now it’s our turn:  It’s Competition Week!

1)  We have two performances at UTM this Saturday: The WTSBOA Marching Festival, where we do not compete against other bands but instead receive ratings similar to Concert Festival in the spring.  That evening we perform in the Aviators Marching Band Invitational, where we will compete in the largest class of bands.  For those unfamiliar with how that works, most competitions, including ours, break up bands according to their size and have them compete against similar size bands.  The one exception will be the State competition, where they base their numbers on School Enrollment.  A full itinerary and more information about Saturday will be available Monday.

2)  Our football game this Friday against Henry County will be pep band only.  Their administration called our school and told them that due to Homecoming events during halftime, we would not have time to perform.  We are still going to go to the game and have a good time playing pep songs, but we will wear our Section T-shirts (we will wear the field show shirts Saturday) and khaki bottoms instead of uniforms.  We will also only need to take the small band trailer.  Report time will be 5:00 and we will leave at 5:15.

3) Speaking of uniforms, we will need to wash those things every week because you know they get nasty with sweaty people performing field shows in them!  Here are the basics: Band uniform jackets and pants can be washed in a washing machine with cold water and detergent with no bleach.  Hang up to dry.  Hand wash the gauntlets so that the Velcro lasts longer.  The Guard uniforms are more fragile and need to be hand washed and hung up to dry.

4)  Guard will have a rehearsal on Monday from 3:30 to 5.  We will get the rifle work to movement 2 done along with starting movement 4 work.

I can't wait until Saturday!!!!!

Announcements 9/12/21

This is a big week!  8th grade night, the Mass Band Jeep Raffle tour comes through Medina, and of course our biggest fundraiser of the year - the Hornet Invitational!

1)  We are going to wear uniforms at this Friday and Saturday night's rehearsals.  Guard: I am hoping those uniforms come in this week, but plan B is going to be the band polos that we wore for the football program pictures.  Band: You need to make sure to wear long black socks Friday night and have them to change into on Saturday night.  Underneath the uniforms, wear your section T-shirts on Friday night and your field show T-shirt on Saturday.  This will also limit what you can get at the concession stand during the Friday night 3rd quarter - water only, no condiments, such as ketchup or mustard, no pizza.  We want those uniforms to continue looking sharp!

2)  Report time Friday will be 5:45.  We will need to put on uniforms, get warmed up, then meet the 8th grade band to play through the National Anthem.  We will play pep songs with them the first half and show them what an awesome experience a high school game and performance is!

3)  Report time Saturday will be 11 am in the Cafeteria for everyone.  I will make sure everyone knows what job they are assigned, and then send off everyone one group at a time to get started.  Make sure you eat something before you get there, and for supper you can get something brought to you or eat at the concession stand.  Please try to car pool and park at the middle school so that we save parking at the high school for the bands and fans.  Parents if you have the field show shirt you can wear that, or wear anything South Gibson apparel or colors.  Otherwise dress comfortably for the weather.  Students will need to report to the band room at 7:00 to put on uniforms and warm up for the 7:45 performance.

4)  The Jeep that is being raffled for a Rose Parade fundraiser will be at SGC on Friday night and Saturday.  We will have a tent set up right outside the gate with raffle tickets for sale.  There are parents assigned to work that table on Saturday, but I need 3-4 parents to work it on Friday night.

2)  Students will need to report at 6:15 Monday night in the Band Room for warm up and set up.  You will need to wear sectional T-shirts for Monday night's performance and the Field Show T-shirts for Friday night's performance, both with Khaki bottoms and tennis shoes.

Announcements 8/1/21

Welcome back to school!  This first week is a big one, so let's get ready to roll!!!

1)  Rifles will meet Monday afternoon from 5:30 to 7 pm in the cafeteria to learn more work for movement 2.

2)  Afterschool rehearsal Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30.

3)  Band Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30 pm in the Band room.  This is a big one!  I will have sign ups for chaperone/pit crew for the football games and competitions and the Hornet Invitational Job list as we kick off the 2021 Marching Season!

4)  Be prepared to go outside any day - watch the weather and have clothes appropriate to the temperature.  I would advise bringing a change of clothes and shoes every day along with water just like at Band Camp.  You can put them in the Band Room in the morning before school.  In the morning, the outside band room doors cannot be unlocked, but you can come through the school once you get inside and come to the band room from the inside.  You can then drop off your items before the bell rings so you don't have to carry them around all day.  At the end of the day, students are allowed to be picked up right outside the Band Room door.

5)  We will not be playing instruments on Monday.  This half day is a day to go over school procedures and policies.  Be prepared to go to your homeroom class at the beginning of the day (I think Freshmen may start in the gym), but listen to the announcement at 7:45 bell to make sure.

Sunday, July 25, 2021

Announcements 7/25/21

1)  We will have rehearsal this Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the practice field.  Freshman Orientation is Tuesday from 6 to 6:30 pm, so the freshmen will come to practice when that is over.  And since Mr. Johnson and I need to be at the orientation, the first few minutes of rehearsal will be at the practice field with fundamentals led by the section leaders.  Front Ensemble will be inside rehearsing.  Also, I will keep an eye on the weather due to the possibility of pop up storms and/or high heat index.  So keep an eye out on Tuesday for any last minute changes to the location of rehearsal.

2)  As you start preparing for school next week, you need to think about having a change of clothes and water for class every day.  You are able to come into the band room from the cafeteria every morning when you get to school and drop off these items along with your instrument in your cubbie in the band room.

3)  Mr. Johnson and I are so proud of the band from Band Camp!  Everyone worked hard, had great attitudes, and got a lot done even in the heat.  And props to the Leadership team for the fun theme days and activities that they organized all week!  It was the perfect kickoff for this marching season that we have been looking forward to this year!

Announcements 7/6/21

I hope everyone has had a great summer!  Next week starts Band Camp and we can't wait to get started!!!

1)  We are going to have a Band Booster meeting this Thursday at 6 pm.  I want to start at 6 so we can be done by 7 because there are a few of you who have kids performing in the school musical that night.  This meeting will give information about Band Camp, give new parents the opportunity to ask about the fall marching season, and let us get started with some logistics going into this fall.  It will be in the Band room and we will try again to live stream it.

2)  Color Guard - we will have a rehearsal this Saturday from 9-noon.  I know this is last minute, but the man choreographing our routine is done with movement 1.  He will not be able to be at band camp next week because he is already committed to another band camp, but he wanted to teach the routine in person.  This will be a great opportunity to get set up for a great week of practice next week where we can really clean that first movement and have it ready to go.

3)  Parents who want to help build props - we will meet briefly after the meeting Thursday night to come up with a game plan, and then have a work day on Saturday morning from 9-noon while the Color Guard is learning their routine.  We need to finish the props we built last year as well as build a cart for our new mixer board.

Announcements 5/16/21

1)  I want to thank everyone for a great year this year!  We were so lucky to be able to have band class all year - something many programs in the state and in the country weren't able to do.  I am thankful that we stayed safe during the year.  Most of all, I am now more thankful than ever for what a "normal" year is.  Sometimes things have to be taken away to really appreciate what they mean to you.  Because of that, I am more excited about this fall than ever before!

2)  If you haven't brought your uniform back in from the parades, please get that done this week.

3)  Laundry detergent was delivered on Friday and is available for pickup starting Monday.

4)  It's time! Field Show music will be given out this week!  8th graders - your music is in the band room at the middle school.  Students who are not in class right now - come by the band room to get your music.  Everyone - this is your music.  Keep up with it, take care of it, we will be using this for the next few months.  Get a binder with page protectors or whatever it takes not to lose this music!

5)  Marching fees this year are as follows - Winds - $150, Percussion and Color Guard - $200.  If you can get half or all of it paid by the end of school, that would be awesome as we begin purchasing services and items for the field show.  Otherwise, it will need to be paid by the end of Band Camp.  Make checks payable to SGCHS.

6)  Our first rehearsals will be starting June 9 from 8 - 11 am.  If you are on vacation, don't worry about it, but try to make it to these June rehearsals if you are in town.

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Announcements 5/9/21

1)  What a great job everyone did this past Friday!  You sounded great on Star Wars the entire route, and represented SGC in amazing fashion within the Mass Band.  Thank you for your hard work and resolve to make it down the parade route twice!

2)  Uniforms need to be brought back this week.  Guard, we need those uniforms back on Monday so that we can get them delivered with the rest of the mass band uniforms for storage until the Rose Parade.  Senior Band members, you can bring those uniforms in anytime this week.  Washing instructions on all uniforms - Use your normal detergent with cold water, no bleach. Let air dry.  It is okay to use stain remover if you need to.

3)  For those that signed up to play at the Baccalaureate service this Tuesday, it will be at Chapel Hill Baptist Church at 7 pm.  I will need you to report there by 6:30 wearing concert attire.  The service will last approximately one hour.

4)  Graduation is a mandatory performance for the Concert band class this Thursday.  Graduation is at the football field and starts at 7 pm.  Report to the Band room at 6 pm wearing concert attire.

Announcements 5/2/21

2)  We were originally planning on not taking buses on Friday, but now we are looking at having buses available to leave from the school and bring us back.  You can still find your own way there if you want.  I will put up a sign up sheet this week for everyone who plans on riding the bus.

3)  Laundry Detergent orders are due on Monday.

4)  The Candle orders have come in, and will be distributed to the students on Monday.

5)  The Band Awards Night is this Saturday at 6:30 in the gym.  Seniors will sit at tables on the gym floor with their families, and everyone else will sit in the bleachers with their families.  We ask that you dress up on this night to reflect on this past year and honor our graduating seniors.

6)  Students, we will be getting a special visit this Thursday during class from Robert Miller, the president of the Tournament of Roses Parade.  He will be flying in to see the students involved in the Mass Band and to see us at the Strawberry Festival Parade.  Plan on playing through the mass band songs during class as we welcome him to our school all the way from California!

Announcements 4/25/21

1)  The teapot parade is this Saturday.  Look for the full itinerary that was posted last Friday to get the times associated with the Parade that morning and the Mass Band rehearsal that evening.

2)  Color Guard will rehearse this Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 pm.

3)  Full Band rehearsal this Thursday from 3:30 to 5 pm.  Everyone needs to be there since this is the only rehearsal we are having together before the parade.  If it is raining, we will meet in the gym.

4)  In person Booster meeting this Thursday at 6:30 in the Cafeteria.  This will replace the May 4th meeting originally scheduled since we needed to go ahead and discuss details about Saturday and Strawberry Festival week.  We will discuss details about the upcoming parades, volunteers that are needed for Strawberry Festival week, Band Awards night details, and Summer rehearsal dates.

5)  The students did a GREAT job on their Concert Festival recording last week.  Those will be scored by judges this coming weekend.  Now it's time to focus on memorizing music for the parades.  Let's get these songs memorized for Saturday!

Announcements 4/11/21

1)  Our Spring Concert is this Tuesday at 7 pm in the Gym.  Students need to be in the gym by 6:30 for warm-up.  Concert attire (dressy clothes)- no jeans, no hats.  Concert is free admission.  Audience members can sit together as a family but need to space 6 feet from other families and will need to wear masks.  Both sides of the gym will be open for audience members, and we will not have a limit or tickets like we had a the Christmas Concert.

2) Color Guard will practice for the parades Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5 pm.

3)  Color Guard - there will also be a special rehearsal this Saturday at Gibson County High School with the rest of the Mass Band Guard to learn the routine for the Mass Band songs for the Spring Parades.  It will be from 9 am until 4 pm in the gymnasium.  You can either bring your own lunch or bring $5 for them to provide you a lunch there.   Bring water, a white based shirt (doesn't have to be plain white, it can have writing on it), wear comfortable shoes, and of course bring your flag.  You will need to take that flag with you after Thursday's practice because if you forget it we won't be able to enter our school Saturday morning due to the ACT being given there that day.  Do your best to be there Saturday so that everyone in the Mass Guard can learn it all at the same time.

4)  Percussion students who are trying out for drumline will be practicing this Tuesday and Thursday.

5)  Jazz Band will rehearse on Thursday after school.

3)  Current Color Guard members who want to be in the Spring Parades will begin afterschool rehearsals this Tuesday and rehearse every Tuesday and Thursday in April from 3:30 to 5 pm.  More information will be given this week about an event on April 17 for color guard members to learn the routine for the Mass Band song with the other Guard members of the Mass Band.\

4)  We will have an afterschool rehearsal this Tuesday and Friday for Percussion members wishing to try out for the 2021 Marching Percussion.  Times are 4:00 to 6:30 to help accommodate the Percussion Instructor's schedule. You may stay in the Band room if you wish from 3-4 to hang out, warm up, and practice.

Announcement 3/21/21

1)  The Color Guard Clinic and Auditions are this week!  The Clinic will be on Monday - Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 where they will go over the fundamentals and a routine that they will do at the audition on Thursday.  The students will find out their individual audition times on Wednesday.

2)  Jazz Band will meet on Tuesday this week from 3:30 to 4:30.

3)  We are starting the process of preparing for the Spring Parades, which means students need to be ready to go outside during class any day.  I recommend you have a pair of shoes ready every day that are fit for marching, and you can keep them by your seat in the Band Room during the day if they are not the shoes you normally wear.  Also, have extra water ready to use for those days we go outside.  Again, you can keep these by your seat during the school day.

Announcements 3/7/21

1)  Jazz Band will meet this Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30.

2)  The chamber ensemble videos are done and are being put together into a concert video now.  We are proud of how the students put so much work into this project.  We already challenge them enough with this ensemble concert by having them pick their own music and rehearse their groups without a director.  But the added challenge of making their own video for a virtual performance brought out even more creativity!  A lot of them learned about video editing, uploading files, and online storage during this process, not to mention the process of organizing a video shoot.  Great job on this project, SGC Band!  Now for the concert video date and time....

3)  Set your calendar for this Thursday at 7 pm to watch the premiere of the 2021 SGC Band Chamber Ensemble Concert on YouTube.  The link will be posted Thursday and will go live at 7 pm.  After that, it will be available any time for viewing on YouTube.

4)  As of right now, the Butter Braids are still on schedule to arrive this Tuesday, March 2 at 1 pm.  They will be available that afternoon for pickup.  They do need to be either delivered or put in a freezer that evening to avoid thawing out.  If anything changes with the delivery, we will let you know.

Announcements 1/3/21

1)  Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a great break, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

2)  Bring your horns on Monday because we will be playing.  Chair Auditions will be at the end of the week and we will be looking at those excerpts and scales starting tomorrow.

3)  All West Audition Registration will be January 29th.  That means you still have time to work on it.  During class, we will be working with those that are interested in trying out.  You will actually have more time during class this semester to get help on the music if you need it.

4)  If you are interested in playing in the Jazz Band, stay after school on Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30.  This will be our introductory practice where we will discuss what Jazz Band will be, what kind of music we will be playing, and pick an afterschool rehearsal day that fits best for everyone.  This is optional, something different, and something more laid back that you can participate in if you are interested.

5)  Two things to know for this week at school - you will go to your homeroom class for the 1st 30 minutes of school Monday, and be patient with the teachers this week - we had a district wide problem with our network and we have been without our computers since that last Friday that teachers were at school.  Most of us are behind on our grades and lesson planning so please be understanding as we might be a little more frazzled than normal this week!
