Announcements 12/7/14

1) For the Breakfast with Santa this Saturday, we will need band students to bring items in so that we can maximize our profits with this fundraiser.  If you have signed up to work at Breakfast with Santa, you will not need to bring anything.  If you are not working at the Breakfast with Santa, you will need to bring the following by Friday: Woodwinds - Quart of White 2% milk, Low Winds/French Horns - Quart of Chocolate milk, Trumpets - Quart of Orange Juice, Guard - napkins, Percussion - Candy Canes.

2)  If you are working at the Breakfast with Santa, we need everyone there to set up at 7 am.  It starts at 8:30 and will be done at 10:30.

3)  By Friday, I need the $10 All West audition fee from those students who are auditioning.

4)  Jazz Band Rehearsal Tuesday.  It is the last one of this semester.  We will get started back up in January.

Fruit Delivery

The fruit will be delivered this Saturday morning, Dec. 6 at 9 am.  This is unusual to have it delivered on Saturday, but I think it will work out okay since we are here for the parade anyway that day.

I will need a crew of students to help unload the truck at 9 am at the school.  You will be able to pick up your fruit from then until 10:30 if you want to go ahead and get it delivered that day.  Also, I will get to school early (around 1:30) if you want to get your fruit then.  Otherwise, it will have to stay in the Band Room until Monday morning.  I recommend you try to get it picked up Saturday to avoid the risk of the fruit starting to go bad in the Band Room.

Announcements 11/30/14

1)  Jazz Band will have rehearsal this Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:30.

2)  Band Booster meeting this TUESDAY at 6:30 pm.  We decided at the last meeting that it had to be moved from Thursday's normal meeting night.  We will be nailing down the details of the Breakfast with Santa as well as picking dates for next semester's fundraisers, including the Miss Harmony beauty pageant.

3)  The final memorization test for the Parade is this Wednesday during class.

4)  Full Band Afterschool Rehearsal this Thursday.  This is a scheduled rehearsal and the only one we have for the Parade.

5)  The Band is scheduled to work concessions this Thursday for the last time this year.  We will need 4 to 5 parents and 3 to 4 students.  Report to the Gym at 5 pm or as close as you can to that time.

6)  Parade this Saturday.  Students are to wear uniforms and Santa hats.  Make sure you have your Santa hats by then.  Report to the School at 2:30 pm where we will depart by 3 pm, or meet at the parade route by 3 pm.  I will get a final count this week on who is planning on riding the bus.  The buses and equipment trailer will be parking between the Oasis and the Elementary school.  The parade begins at 4 pm.

Announcements 11/23/14

1)  The Band is assigned to work concessions Monday and Tuesday night.  I have a few volunteers signed up, but it wouldn't hurt to have 2 or 3 more parents and/or students.  Report time is 5 pm or close to that as you can.  We usually close down around 9 or so.  If you want to coordinate with someone else to work "shifts", that is fine also.  Finally, I need one volunteer to go by McDonalds at 5 pm to pick up the burgers to sell.  Basketball concessions are nowhere near the job that football concessions are, so don't be scared to volunteer.  If you have any questions about it, just let me know.

2)  Jazz Band Rehearsal this Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:30.  Our first two rehearsals have been super, with more participation than I have ever had!  I have really enjoyed it thus far.

3)  Just a friendly reminder that the final exam for this class is going to be the 12 major scales and chromatic scale memorized.  We have been working on these scales every day during class - keep working on them.  Scales are a major foundation of playing your instrument and reading music.

Announcements 10/19/14

1)  A huge and heartfelt "Thank You!" to every student who worked their tail off without one complaint and to every parent who diligently worked their post while setting a great example with great attitudes and a sense of fun.  There were absolutely no problems - NONE - from any of the jobs, any of the students, or any of the parents who were working!  I heard compliment after compliment from directors, staff, and judges about how welcome we made them feel and how hospitable the atmosphere was.  The event ran on time, even with one band showing up late (it was not their fault).  I could not have asked for a better night for our first ever competition.  There is a reason that many teachers brag about how good the band students and parents are.  You are the best!

2)  Drumline (not front ensemble) will have rehearsal tomorrow from 3:30 to 4:45.  We have to clean up to get ready for a big showdown this weekend!

3)  Report time Friday will be 5:45.  Parents of Seniors:  Be ready to escort your child to the field before the game starts for the Senior Night (I will let you know the exact time as soon as I find out if you haven't already been told).  I have seen parents in the past really dress up, and I have also seen some in jeans.  It is pretty much up to you what to wear.  Band Seniors will wear their uniforms, but no hats - the ladies can dress up their hair and wear jewelry for the pictures.

4)  Our performance time for the contest Saturday has been changed to 8:30 (it was originally 8 pm.)  A new itinerary will be posted soon, but most of the times will still be the same, including the report time.

5)  Have I told everyone "Thank you!" yet?  Because, seriously, everyone was awesome Saturday.

Sunday, October 12, 2014

Announcements 10/12/14

1)  No Rehearsal this Tuesday - enjoy Fall Break!

2)  Rehearsal this Thursday - 3:30 to 5:30.

3)  Report time this Friday will be 5 pm and a departure time of 5:30 to Crockett County.

4)  Report time this Saturday will be 10 am in the Band Room for the 1st Annual HORNET INVITATIONAL!  The weather is looking good and I can't wait to put on a show with everyone's help.  Let's make this first competition flawless so that every band that attends this year not only wants to come back, but also tell everyone they know what a great show it was!  I will send out a separate announcement later this week with more information about the competition.

5)  Continue to bring in candy for the Trunk-or-Treat on October 27.  If you are signed up to participate, start working on the project with the rest of your team.

6)  Performance time for Huntingdon's contest on October 25 is 8:00 pm.  A full itinerary will be given later this week.
7)  Finish selling your BBQ!  This will help us pay for the charter buses we are taking to State!  They are due this Thursday.

7)  Everyone will need to wash their uniform this week before the weekend performances.

Sunday, September 21, 2014

Announcements 9/21/14

1)  Everyone did such a great job Saturday at Henry County's contest that the football team decided to give the whole band (including parents) the night off this Friday night.  Okay, you got me - it's a bye week.  Take Friday night to rest and relax for Saturday.

2)  Saturday is an all day competition (it is actually two performances in one day)  Make sure you are rested and ready to perform at your highest both times.  Once again we are in a tough class!

3)  Drumline and Front Ensemble rehearsal on Monday from 3:30 to 4:45

4)  Everyone in the band needs to get their uniforms washed again before this weekend.   They need to be cleaned after performing in such warm weather this past weekend!

5)  We won't have time to listen to all the judges comments during class, so I will be playing the comments over the speaker in the Band room starting at 7:20 am the next few mornings.  If you can make to the Band Room in the mornings, this is a good chance to get more feedback from the judges this past weekend.

2)  We are still looking for sponsors for trophies and programs.  Remember that an option is for an individual to sponsor a trophy and request that a specific student hand it out.  Also, we are up to 13 bands in our competition so there will be lots of people looking at the ads in the programs.

3)  For Saturday's contest, students need to wear their Band T-shirts and either wear shorts underneath their uniforms or bring pants to change into.  Do not wear pants underneath the uniforms as they will drop below the uniform pants and be seen.  Dressing rooms are available at Henry County High School.

4) If you are interested in either the personalized yard sign or the vinyl decals that go on windows of cars, sign up for those or let me know you want one by the end of the week.  Yard signs are $10 and decals are $5

Announcements 9/1/14

1)  Afterschool rehearsals this Tuesday and Thursday, Home Game Friday.

2)  Booster meeting this Thursday.  We will be talking a lot about the Hornet Invitational and the jobs that need to be done.  Be there to make sure you get the job you want!

3)  A Head's up:  Next Tuesday's rehearsal is the Night Rehearsal from 6 to 8 pm. That means we will not have the regular 3:30 to 5:30 rehearsal that day. This night rehearsal has been on the schedule since March.  The main purpose of this rehearsal is to give parents the chance to learn the basics of how the props will operate on the field and how the pit crew works on the sideline.  If you have signed up for pit crew this year and still are not 100% sure what to do, make plans to be here as we will have experienced parents there to guide the process along.

4)  As we prepare for contests starting in 3 weeks, our food committee has worked hard to gather prices on food that we plan to feed the students at each of our 5 contests.  In year's past we have asked students to bring in a few dollars each week to pay for this food.  This year, the food committee is asking each student to pay a one-time $20 for the whole year.  This will give the students one meal and lots of snacks at each contest, including the pizza at State Competition.  (As a comparison, a hamburger and coke inside the stadium usually costs $5 at each contest.  For a total of $20 for five contests, this is actually a very good deal.)

5)  We are still accepting sponsors for Hornet Invitational Trophies and Program Ads.  Note that the two Grand Champion trophies already have sponsors, but we still have plenty of 1st-3rd place trophies available for businesses or individuals to sponsor.
