Fruit Delivery

The official word from the Fruit company is that the fruit will be delivered THURSDAY, DEC. 9 around 10:30 am. Obviously, that is significantly sooner than the projected Dec. 15 date. But if there are 3 or 4 parents that could come to the school during the day to help organize, I would have a lot of band students to help unload.

Here is one thing to keep in mind. The truck is planning on getting to the school at 10:30, but there will be Testing going on until around 11. So I will tell the front office ladies to tell the truck driver to wait outside until the testing is done. That means we will not start unloading the truck and organizing the fruit until 11:00.

Everyone else can pick up their fruit orders from the band room anytime the next couple of days. I will keep the band room cool so the fruit will keep longer.

Uniform washing

First of all, let me congratulate your children on a job well done on a cold December day at the Christmas parade. They looked good, played good, and did what they were supposed to when they were supposed to do it. I can't ask for anything more. A special props to the Guard for making up their OWN routine for this parade. Awesome!

Now the uniforms need washed. Yeah, they stink. If you would be willing to take a uniform or 2 home to wash, it would make it a lot easier than 5 or 6 parents taking 10 uniforms home. It is really easy - you take the white sash in the middle of the uniform off, put the rest of the uniform in the washer with COLD water, detergent with NO bleach, and no fabric softener, and hang to dry. And the guantlets have to be hand washed while keeping the velcro dry. I have copies of the company's washing instructions in the band room if you want more detailed instructions. I, and the students, would greatly appreciate your help in this!

P.S. Everyone is invited to the Winter Band and Chorus Concert Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7 pm - free admission.

Fruit Fundraiser

We kicked off the Fruit Fundraiser during class today. Everyone student should have at least one order form and a goal in mind. I am asking that each student try to sell $265 worth of fruit. It is important that we do well on this fundraiser as most, if not all, of the money will be going toward purchasing a large enclosed trailer to transport equipment to games, competitions, parades, etc. To help motivate the students, I am initiating 2 competitions for this fundraiser:

1) An individual competition - 1st place individual sales (dollar amount) gets $30 cash. 2nd place gets $20, and 3rd place gets $10.
2) A team competition - the Band is split into 5 teams of 9 members. The team that sells the most dollar amount of fruit gets a pizza party.

Here is the price list in case you need to double check:
Large Grapefruit $25
Small Grapefuit $17
Large Navels $25
Small Navels $18
Large Tangelos $25

Booster Meeting Nov. 4

This is a reminder that there will be a booster meeting this Thursday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 pm. We will be discussing the upcoming Fruit Fundraiser, the Breakfast with Santa event, and other business.

By the way, we did a great job on the BBQ fundraiser, raising a very good amount of money and feeding a lot of people some great food!

Booster Meeting

I have heard from many of you regarding the meeting on Thursday, and have decided to do this: If you are going to the board meeting at the elementary school, come by the Band Room right after rehearsal and I will give you the information/items for the BarBQ fundraiser and the Spring 2011 trip. During this time, if you have any ideas for other fundraisers that you would like to head up (small ones like selling Mary Kay products or a yard sale or something) let me know and we will keep the fundraisers going throughout the year. We already have some bigger ones lined up, but the small ones don't hurt either.

We will go ahead and have the official meeting Thursday at 6:30 pm. The meeting minutes will be sent over email and put on the website soon afterward. Thanks!

Concessions at Aug 23 Game

We talked at the Booster meeting last Thursday about trying to get some of the concessions at the Football games for a fundraiser. Last year, we made quite a bit of money on 2 basketball games. So I asked Coach Hinson about signing us up for some football concessions, and he was glad to hear it because he was having a hard time getting some of the games worked.

So he told me today we are signed up for the Aug 23 game. That's next Monday. Could I get around 5 parents to volunteer to work the concessions that night? Please let me know and I will find out the report time ASAP (it will probably be around 6 or so). Thanks!

Booster Meeting

A reminder to everyone that we will be having our first Booster meeting of the year this Thursday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 pm in the Band Room! All right, now calm down. We will be discussing a few things including what kind of fundraisers to do this year. See you there.

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Band T-Shirts

The students that came to practice received their band T-shirts for this semester. Everyone else will receive them at the next rehearsal. Be sure to keep up with these, as they will be required to wear them at all football games and competitions. These T-shirts were part of their band camp fees, so there is no further cost for the shirts.

If any parents, family, or friends want a Band T-shirt, I will be selling them at cost for $10. However, I need to send it all in on one order. So I need to get the size of everyone that wants one - and the money! - by Friday, August 13th. This way I can get them made in time for the first Home game on August 23. I will have a sign-up sheet in the Band Room, or you can simply send me the sizes by email before you send the money. Remember - sizes and money are both due by August 13th.

By the way, please make all checks out to SGCHS or South Gibson County High School. Do not put "Band". It all runs through the school (we have our own sub-account), so the bank doesn't like to have anything other than the school's name on the check.

Notes for Rehearsals this week.

Rehearsals this week are from 4-6. Tuesday, because of inservice, I may not be able to be there until right at 4. I will try to have someone come and open the door for everyone before then. And everyone who shows up to Tuesday's rehearsal will get a present! So be there. Thursday, we will get done a few minutes early to get ready for Orientation/Open House. Have a good week!

Change for Exhibition

Tonight at 6 pm, we will be giving the exhibition for the parents in the CAFETORIUM. Because of the heat, we will not be going outside this afternoon during rehearsal, and I do not want the audience to be standing outside in the dangerous heat.

Monday, July 26, 2010

Friday Night

I have added something to the schedule this week. I want the students to give a performance for the parents and family this Friday at 6 pm. If you already had something planned to where you cannot make it, I fully understand. Otherwise, any friends, family, and acquaintances of band members are invited to attend the exhibition performance of "Let's Have Some Fun!"

Request for Tent

As we prepare for this week, we are in need of a tent of some sort to keep us out of the sun during breaks. I have already contacted Medina Funeral Home, who were gracious but had already lent theirs out. I want to thank everyone for a great beginning to band camp last week, where we got lots done to prepare for this coming week!

Monday, July 19, 2010

It is Time!!!

It is finally time to start working toward our first ever competitive marching season. Band Camp is Thursday and Friday (July 22-23) from 8 am to 12 pm, and Monday through Friday (July 26-30) from 8 am to 5 pm. Here are some things to remember:

We will be outside quite a bit. Eat a good breakfast, bring water or gatorade to the school (please stay away from soft drinks, and absolutely no energy drinks). Dress appropriately (white t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes). I suggest you bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and maybe an extra t-shirt or towel to put over your head while you are outside. The 2nd week, lunch will be from 11:45 to 12:45. You will have to take care of your own lunch. Feel free to bring a cooler with sandwiches or other types of lunches.

Finally, Everyone needs a small notepad for band camp. I want you to have the cheap small 3" x 5" notepads. You will use these to write down your position on the field as we start setting the pictures on the football field.

The drill (pictures that we make on the football field) has been written, and everyone has a place to fill, so be prepared to represent SGCHS proudly as a member of the Marching Band!

--
Stephen Price
Director of Bands
South Gibson County High School

p.s. Also, please remember that the $175 band camp fee is due by July 28.

Calender and Handbook

I have put the calender and Handbook in PDF formats to the side of the site for your use. I have added the football games to the calender. *Also, I have had to change the date of the Christmas Concert because it conflicted with the School Board meeting that month. The Concert is now Dec. 7 at 7 pm, and the dress rehearsal is now Dec. 6 from 3:15 to 5 pm. Look for anymore updates to the calender on this site and through email updates in the future.

Monday, June 28, 2010

Rehearsal Tuesday

We will have rehearsal Tuesday, June 29 from 6-8 pm. We will run a little outside to continue to prepare ourselves physically, so wear shoes that are made for running. Encourage those who have not made to rehearsals to attend, as these are a great way to get a head start on the coming year! Also, I am asking all drumline members to show up at 5:00 instead of 6:00 if possible, so that we can get an extra hour of rehearsal time. We can use this time to stress the technique of the stroke, and learn some new warm-ups. See you then!

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Reminder

A reminder to everyone that there will not be practice this coming Tuesday, June 22. Our next rehearsal is the following Tuesday, June 29. One change that I do have is that I am requesting that all drumline personnel that can make it one hour earlier (5 pm), please plan to do so for the remaining Tuesday rehearsals. We need that extra time to get caught up in the music.

Thanks!

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Tuesday practice

A reminder to everyone about tonight's (June 15) practice from 6-8 pm. This will be mostly a music rehearsal, but we will run a couple of laps as we prepare for the marching season both musically and physically.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Golf Scramble

I need people to help the following areas Saturday:

2 people (parents or students) to put the names of the players on the Carts.
2 more people (parents or students) at the registration table to sign people in and hand out goody bags
1 person to bring a small grill (I think it will be easier to grill burgers and hot dogs than for yall to bring sandwiches.)
1 scorecard keeper (to take up the scorecards when the teams finish)
1 official scorecard writer (to write the scores on the big poster board for everyone to see)

I still need a lot of water, cokes, ice, gaterade, and snacks for the golfers during the round.
Lunch = Burgers and hot dogs, chips, buns, and some kind of snack cake for dessert, and drinks (water, gaterade, cokes). (enough for about 30 people)

I will not set up snack tents, we will just have someone drive a cart around with the snacks and ask the players if they want a drink or snack.

I have decided not to do anything Friday night. It will not take us that long to do it Saturday morning. But we will need to get there around 6 30 am. There are two main times I need a lot of people: from 6:30 to 8:30 for set-up and registration, and from 12:00 -2:00 for lunch and take-down.

Schedule:
6:30 am - set out sponsor signs, set up registration table and pavilion, stack snack cart
7:00 am - Registration begins, hand out goody bags as players register. Most players will pay at this time, so we will need Mrs. Reams with the receipt book (Thank you!)
7:55 am - send players to their first assigned tee. I will have these assignments ready by Saturday.
8:00 am - Tournament starts. We will need a snack carts constantly driving the snacks and drinks around. We can do this in shifts if we need to. From now until the end (approx 12:00 to 12:30), you can leave and come back if you choose. We just need people to keep the snack cart full.
12:00 - start grilling the burgers and hot dogs
12:30 - everyone should be finished, we will serve lunch (we can also have someone on a cart taking down the sponsor signs)
1:00 - give out the 1st and 2nd place prizes and door prizes
1:30 - clean-up and take down.

Diamond Jaxx Change!

First of all, I won't know until tomorrow if the game will be called. But keep your ears and eyes open for that announcement. I will let everyone know as soon as I know.

Right now though, there is a change for tomorrow. The game has been changed to a Double Header, and the National Anthem will be played at 5:00. I am trying to get a bus to get the students down there where you can pick them up anytime after we finish the national anthem. But just in case, I may need some of you to who can drive some students in your car/minivan to prepare for that. I understand that most of you work and can't do it, and that's why I need the few of you who can to help us out if we need it.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and I will let everyone know the procedure for honoring tickets in case of a rainout. Thanks!

*Update* I was able to get a bus. The bus will take them to the game, but they will need to be picked up from the game. The bus will not take them back to the school.

Leadership Positions

As we prepare for next year, one of the things we must do is fill the leadership positions. Any band or guard member currently in high school can get a leadership application from me. Also, any students interested in trying out for Drum Major needs to see me so we can set up the audition process.

Strawberry Festival Itinerary

Itinerary
Strawberry Festival Parade
Friday, May 7, 2010

7:45 am Report to SGCHS Band Room. Load equipment on bus. Put on uniform pants, long black socks, and shoes (make sure your shoes have your name on them). Wear shorts and T-shirt underneath. Put uniform jacket and gauntlets on a hanger to put on bus with your hatbox. No jewelry is allowed when the uniform is on, and all hair must be pulled up off the collar.

8:15 am Depart South Gibson County High School.

8:45 am Arrive at Bailey Park. Students will get instruments off the bus, then get fully dressed, then put the cases back on the bus. Chaperones will be there to help you get dressed and to make sure everything gets put back on the bus.

9:15 am Line-up in Parade set and warm-up.

9:30 am Parade begins. We are the 7th band in the parade. Be focused on representing the band and SGCHS with professionalism.

10:45 am End of parade for us. Students will put instruments back in cases, put full uniform on the hangers, and then load the instruments on the bus. Parents will inspect the uniforms to make sure they are on the hangers correctly. After everything is taken care of satisfactorily, you will be dismissed to enjoy the parade and eat lunch. Make sure you bring spending money. If you will be leaving with a parent I will need a signed note by that parent. While you are enjoying the rest of the parade, remember that you are still ambassadors of SGCHS and the band!

1:45 pm Report back to bus and depart Humboldt.

2:15 pm Arrive at SGCHS Band room. Take the uniforms back to the storage room, then unload the instruments off the bus.

Teapot Parade

After much consideration, I have decided not to go to the Teapot Parade this weekend. With the 90% chance of not only showers, but heavy thunderstorms, I don't see the need in debuting the new uniforms in such conditions, not to mention risking the safety of the students. Even if we performed in the Peabody Gym, it would still be a mess loading and unloading equipment in the weather. I look forward to next Friday's Strawberry Festival, where the initial outlook is sunny and clear!

Thanks for your understanding.

Concert Reminder

Remember that our Spring Concert is this Thursday April 22 at 7 pm in the SGCHS Cafetorium! We will have some great music for you, and the best thing is... Admission is Free! Students need to be on stage ready to warm-up at 6 pm, wearing dress clothes (no jeans or tennis shoes). I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Diamond Jaxx Game

I just wanted to take some time to clarify the details of the Diamond Jaxx Game. This is an event that kind of got put in front of us that I think can really be beneficial, not only monetarily, but also in community support. I want this to be an event, not just a fundraiser. The Band will play the national anthem, one of our students will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and we will be recognized over the sound system during the game. Friday, May 21 will be "South Gibson Band" night.

I also want to take this opportunity to go ahead and let the 8th grade band have the opportunity to join us. In my mind, I already consider them to be a part of the band since they will be only a couple of short weeks from finishing middle school by then. I want them to play the national anthem with us, and sit with us in the stands. I will present this to the boosters at their meeting next Tuesday.

Remember as you sell the tickets, tell the people we want as many people from the South Gibson community as possible so that we can have a great time in fellowship with friends. Tickets are $10, they are for the green reserved seats, not the bleacher seats, and the tickets will be picked up at will call the night of the game. For this reason, I will need all orders in by Friday, May 14.

Finally, just in case it didn't make it home with your child, here is the Diamond Jaxx Ticket order form.

The Next 4 Weeks

The next four weeks for the SGCHS Band are going to be busy, as we have reached the culmination of this semester's work. The students that are in the class are going to go to Solo and Ensemble Festival tomorrow (Tuesday) during the school day. Be sure to encourage them as they use this chance to showcase their individual talent. Next week, we will present our Spring Concert on Thursday, April 22 at 7 pm in the SGCHS Cafetorium. The following week, on May 1st, we will participate in the Teapot Festval Parade. And the next week, we will end up a busy month with a huge Band Booster/Band Camp registration meeting on Thursday, May 6, the Strawberry Festival on May 7, and the Band Banquet on May 8.

If you would like to chaperone the two parades, let me know. Finally, don't forget about the after-school rehearsals on April 13, 15, 19, 20, 27, 29, and May 4 and 6.

Also remember that the first After school rehearsal for the band is April 8. Thanks!

Summer Rehearsals

We are going to do 5 rehearsals this summer to keep up our chops, get a head start on the field show, and get to know the incoming freshmen a little sooner. I understand that some of these dates will conflict with some of your summer plans that you have already made, but I do want all students to attend at least 3 out of the 5 rehearsals. They will be on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 8:30 in the evening so that you will be able to get them to the school easier after work, and so that we can enjoy the cool night air!

Dates for the Summer Rehearsals: June 8, June 15, June 29, July 6, and July 13.

Bread Arrival

The Pastry bread is scheduled to arrive at the school Monday Morning, March 29 at approx. 2:00 pm. Please arrange to come and pick it up or for your child to take it home. I want to thank everyone for a successful fundraiser, as this will help us get through the rest of this year. Keep up the support for the SGCHS Band!

Change to Band Camp

Due to many circumstances, including the inability to find enough staff to work the original dates, I have decided to move the dates for band camp forward one week. The new dates are: July 22-23 from 8am - noon, and July 26-30 from 8am - 5pm.

I am sorry if this inconveniences anyone, but it needed to be done. Hopefully, this will actually give you an extra week to enjoy your summer break!

Golf Scramble

Ok, we have a date and a place for the 2010 Marching Hornets Golf Scramble. It will be at Diamond Oaks Golf Club in Trenton starting at 8 a.m., and I had to move the date to June 5 because that is the only time that they had to host it. Next year, we can start earlier and maybe get Milan or Humboldt Country Clubs.

Now, the first thing we need is sponsors. Namely a Primary Sponsor. If you know of a business (or individual) who would be willing to donate $1000 to the band, we would put their name and logo on all pre-tournament advertising, such as flyers and any radio or newspaper announcements. Also, we would advertise their business on 5 of the holes at the course. All of this would increase public awareness about the company's corporate citizenship. I really want a Primary Sponsor by the time we meet next week at the Booster Meeting.

We will also be looking for individual hole sponsors. They will be $100 each. Also, we will need items for goody bags and for door prizes. If you know of anyone or any business willing to help out. Please let me know or have them call me at 731-499-3888 or email me at southgibsonband@gmail.com

Finally, we need people to play in the tournament. It will be $50 per player/$200 per team. I will talk about specifics at next week's Booster Meeting (Thursday, March 4, 6:30 in the SGCHS Band Room).

Thanks for all your help!

Spring Schedule

Please note the Spring Schedule on the right side of this webpage. If you have any conflicts with anything on that schedule, please let me know ASAP so we can try to work it out. Thanks!

Note that the Band Banquet will have to be May the 8th because the Spring Play will be presented the weekend of May 1st.

Also, Band Camp has been scheduled July 15-16 from 8:00 to 12:00, and July 19-23 from 8:00 - 5:00.

p.s. by the way, if anyone has an old DVD player, a 19-inch TV, or an old CD player with RCA jacks and you just want to get rid of them - I will gladly take them off your hands to use in the band room.

Uniform Measurements

I need a couple of parents to come help measure the band students for uniforms. Next Wednesday, during class (1:30-3:00), I want to get all of the band students measured so that we can finally get the uniforms ordered. Also, for the students not in the class this 2nd semester, I need you to try to get out of class for a few minutes or come right after school to get this done.

Thanks

Basketball Game

A reminder that there is a Basketball game this Friday, Jan. 15. The Band will play and I will need parents again to help work the concession stand. It will be the same schedule as last time: Be there at 5:30, students wear band shirts and jeans. Parents, I appreciate the work that you all got done last time. It went really smooth, and I look forward to seeing some new faces help us out this game.

Booster Meeting

We will NOT have a Booster meeting this evening (Thurs, Jan. 7) at 6:30 in the Band room. All after school activities have been canceled per Mr. Rogers, including the basketball game, so that means we have to cancel our meeting also. Sorry.

Monday, January 4, 2010

Dates

We are jumping back in with both feet into the new year. We have a Basketball game Tuesday, Jan. 5 and Friday Jan. 15. These are graded performances for the band just like football games. I need all students to wear the band button-up shirts and jeans. I also need parents there to work the concessions - you can wear whatever you want. The game will start at 6. Parents and students need to be there by 5:15 to get everything ready.

Also, remember the Booster meeting this Thursday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 in the South Gibson County Band Room.
