1)  The band will have afterschool rehearsal on Monday from 3:30 to 5:30 to prepare for the concert.  This will not include the color guard.

Announcements 12/8/19

1)  Jazz Band Rehearsal on Monday.  Also, the Jazz Band will perform at the District Christmas dinner Thursday.  Wear all black.  Be there at 5:15 to go over the music, then they district is feeding us supper at 6 pm.  We will perform after we eat, and you will be dismissed after we perform.

2)  Remember that the online deposit of $50 is due for the Rose Parade by December 15.  I have the list of parents that signed up to be chaperones.  I can't give a definitive list of who the chaperones are going to be until after the initial deposit date, though.  There is just no way to get an exact number of students going until we see the solid numbers after the deposit.  I will get that list of chaperones out ASAP, though, so that you can know if you need to plan for the Family/Friends itinerary.

3)  Thank you to everyone who helped in one way or another for making the Breakfast with Santa event on Saturday a success!

4)  Great job band on Saturday at the Christmas Parade.  You looked and sounded great, and represented the school with pride!

Notes from the Rose Parade meeting

Notes from the Rose Parade meeting:

1)  If you want to set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for an individual account, you cannot use the school's name or advertise it as a school trip.  This is district policy.  We are only allowed to use the school's name on the main GoFundMe page that is on Roses2021.com.

2)  Make sure you get the gold star on your driver's license when you renew it.  This is required to fly.  Also, individuals under 16 do not need an ID to board the plane.  If you are 16 and over, you must have a valid ID to board the plane.

3)  If you are planning on going on the Friends and Family package, you must purchase the complete package. There are lots of options within the itinerary, but you cannot get there late or only use a couple of days of the package.  For example, if you can only be there on a Thursday  and Friday, you would need to just plan the trip separately from the Performing Arts Consultants altogether.

4)  Fundraising individual accounts will work exactly as they do now.  I will keep up with the fundraising accounts and send the company one check with each person's name on it.

5)  In a day or so, I will be sent a link for you to use for online payments for the initial deposit.  They wanted to make sure that you knew that each account is based on each individual's email.  So each student and chaperone must have their own email.

6)  Children 3 and under will not have the same pricing (for example, they get in free to Disneyland), so they will have an option on the online form for you to make a note if you are bringing a young child.

2)     Jazz Band will rehearse Monday from 33:30 to 4:30.

3)     Tuesday during the school day we will be taking our group picture for the yearbook.  Make sure you have your uniform back at school by then.

4)     Thursday is our Parade Rehearsal from 3:30 to 5 pm.

5)     Thursday night is the Booster meeting at 6:30 pm.  We will be getting the logistics together for the Breakfast with Santa fundraiser on Saturday.

6)     The Breakfast with Santa is Saturday from 8-10 am.  Workers will need to be there at 6:30 am to get everything set up.  I will have a list for 15 students to sign up to work on Saturday.  Community service hours can be earned for this event.  If you are not working, I will need you to bring a donation by Friday of the following items to help us make this a successful fundraiser!:

Woodwinds: half gallon of white milk

Trumpets: Styrofoam or plastic cups

French Horns: Sausage patties (frozen pre-cut)

Low Brass: Orange Juice

Percussion: Candy Canes (any kind)

Guard: half gallon of Chocolate milk

7)     The Medina Christmas Parade is Saturday at 4:30 pm.  Students will meet at Soul’s Harbor Church at 3 pm.  We will not be meeting at the school.  You will need to take your uniform and instrument home with you on Friday.  For drumline and large instruments, we will take the band trailer and park it at the old elementary school.  You will get the instrument there and walk down to the church.  We are all wearing plain red and white Santa hats with the uniforms.  Students will need to be picked up at the old elementary school (end of the parade route).

3)  Also remember our rehearsal on Thursday December 5 from 3:30 to 5:00, the Booster meeting on December 5 at 6:30, the Breakfast with Santa fundraiser on Saturday December 7th in the morning and the Medina Christmas Parade on that same Saturday in the afternoon.

Announcements 11/17/19

1)  There is an information meeting Monday night at 6:30 pm in the cafetorium.  It is not mandatory.  I will be sharing what information I have so far and taking any questions.   The big kickoff meeting that will involve the travel company and the other 4 high schools will be December 2 at 6:30 pm at Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Humboldt.  This will be one that everyone who is planning on going will need to be at.

3)  This is still a couple of weeks away, but remember that our only afterschool rehearsal for the Christmas Parade is going to be Thursday, December 5 with the parade that Saturday the 7th.  We will be wearing Santa hats.  They will need to be plain red and white.

4)  I want to thank the students who played at the football game Friday night.  You did great, we had a lot of fun, and you were even featured as the Band of the Week on WBBJ!

Sunday, November 10, 2019

Announcements 11/10/19

1)  For the playoff game at home this Friday, I will have a sign up sheet for volunteers.  I need a good mix of instrumentation, and the guard are welcome to sign up to come cheer on the team.  We will not be wearing uniforms, you simply need to dress warmly.  Report time will be 6:30.  We will only be playing pep songs, we will not play the National Anthem, and we will get halftime off instead of the 3rd quarter.

2)  We will be playing the National Anthem at the Veteran's Day program at school on Monday.  Please wear concert attire for the performance at 11 am.

3)  Jazz Band will meet on Monday from 3:30 to 4:30.  Anyone interested is welcome to attend as we work up one song for the Christmas concert and get a head start on next semester.

Announcements 10/27/19

1) Congratulations again on our best finish ever (by far) at the Bandmaster's Championship.  You all were ready to PERFORM, not just go through the motions, and the judges recognized that!

2)  Keep bringing it to our final rehearsals during STATE WEEK!  We will have signups for the assigned seating on the charter buses this week.  We will have our normal Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals.  And then we will have a special year-end celebration Friday night at 5:30 followed immediately by our final rehearsal on the football field from 6:30 to 8:30.  Food will be provided for you Friday night at 5:30 by Mt. Zion Church.  (We will not be attending the game Friday night.  The team has already wrapped up the region title and I want everyone to get a good night's rest before Saturday.  Mr. Rogers and Coach Stidham have our full support).

3)  Report time on Saturday is 7:45 am.  We will load the buses and leave at 8:15.

Sunday, October 20, 2019

Announcements 10/20/19

1)  This Friday night is Senior Night.  Senior parents, I will let you know as soon as I am told what time you need to be there.  In the past, they wanted parents at the field at 6:15 to start at 6:30.  The Band will be at the field to watch the Senior Introductions, so seniors can give their instrument to an underclassman so it is down there for the National Anthem.  Senior parents are not allowed to work the pit crew Friday night - they must remain in the stands to watch their babies in their last home performance!

2)  Saturday is the Bandmasters Championship at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.  Report time for Front Ensemble is 10:30 and for everyone else it is 11 am.  You will be fed lunch after the rehearsal.  When we get to Memphis, we will have Pizza for an early supper because of the high prices of concessions at the Liberty Bowl.  If you want pizza, please bring $5 this week.

3)  As you wash your uniforms, it was suggested by one of our parents to use Color Catcher sheets and to wash the pants separately from the jackets.  She saw that by doing this it would greatly extend the life of the bright Columbia Blue color of the jackets.  Thank you for taking care of our new uniforms - we have received so many compliments from people throughout the season!

Mid Week Announcements

1)  If your child is planning on going on the New York trip next Spring, the next fundraiser is ready to go.  Yankee Candle forms will be available during class today.  In order for the products to be delivered by Christmas Break they will need to be turned back in by November 5th.  100% of the profit will go toward the student's account for the NY Trip.  Profits vary depending on the item but usually range from 40-45% of the cost of the item.

2)  This Friday the band will only be performing pep songs due to the long travel time to Covington.  It's much the same situation as McNairy a few weeks back.  The students will be wearing Khaki bottoms and their Band shirts or Sections shirts just like earlier in the season.  Also keep in mind the weather is supposed to be in the high 40s/low 50s during the game so a jacket or a Band Sweatshirt/Hoodie is encouraged to keep warm.  In a couple of weeks, we will do the same thing for the Bolivar game.

3)  This Saturday is the Gibson County competition.  If there are any changes in plans due to a slight chance of rain, I will let you know ASAP.  But in the past, we have kept the same schedule no matter what and made decisions about performance once we have arrived at the event.  Also, for more information about concessions, admission price, and other things about the contest, you can go here: https://sites.google.com/site/gchsmarchingpioneers/Home/gchs-marching-invitational

Announcements 9/29/19

1) The Huntingdon contest is this Saturday. A full itinerary will be posted on Monday, but report time will once again be 8 am at the practice field.

2)  We have a home game this Friday vs. Westview.  Report time will be 6 pm.

3)  Please wash your uniforms.  They are machine washable.  Simply use cold water and non-bleach detergent and then let the uniform air dry.  The only exception is the gauntlets which need to be hand washed due to the velcro.

4)  I want to thank everyone for a great day on Saturday.  The parents did a great job of taking care of the students and cheering them on. The band did an excellent job of performing in the heat.  We were one of only 4 bands that received Superiors in every category at the WTSBOA Marching Festival - Band, Color Guard, Field Commander, and Percussion.  And we placed 5th overall out of a stacked 19 bands that evening!  But the best thing is that we improved in every performance this weekend starting on Friday and ending on Saturday night.  Let's continue the improvement this week as we refine the musical and visual aspects of the show to prepare for another tough contest this Saturday!

We will perform the National Anthem at approximately 6:50.  We will perform at approximately 7:30, and you will be dismissed from the band room after we put everything in its proper place.  A full itinerary will be posted tomorrow.  Admission to the event is $6.

2)  We have rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday, and I also know that some section leaders have scheduled sectionals on Monday.  If at all possible, please attend these sectionals.  They are led by the section leaders and are the best chance to get individual attention on any trouble spots in the music and/or drill.

3)  Please mark Tuesday evening, August 20 on your schedule for the 1st Annual SGCHS Band Family and Friends Preview Show.  We will feed the students after rehearsal, then perform the show for our friends, family, and the community at 7 pm in the Football Stadium.  To help us get a good start to the season, we are also using this as a fundraiser.  With your $5 admission, you will receive a burger, chips, and drink and a chance to see the band in the early stages of the show without all of the added noise of a football game.

Announcements 8/4/19

1)  School is here!  You will not need instruments on Monday, but you will for the rest of the week.

2) Remember we have afterschool rehearsal every Tuesday and Thursday until 5:30.  But we will also be going outside even on the other days of the week, so always bring a change of clothes to be ready to go outside during class.

3)  Booster meeting this Tuesday at 6:30.  We will be going over the job assignments for the Hornet Invitational as well as some logistics for some other events this month.

4)  You have the first two weeks of school to finish selling the Smart Cards.  If you need more, let me know and I will get those to you.

5)  We are looking at having pictures taken this week.  Seniors, on Wednesday you will wear uniforms for your Senior Banner pictures.  Guard - I expect your uniforms in shortly.  We may have to reschedule your pictures for later in the week or early next week.  Full Band will take pictures for the Football program on Thursday.  It is taking longer than expected to get the Band T-shirts, so plan on wearing Khaki bottoms (pants or shorts) with a black top.  Try to wear as plain black top as possible but if it has something small printed on it, it will be okay.

Sunday, July 28, 2019

Announcements 7/28/19

1)  Remember the rehearsal this Tuesday from 7-9 pm.  We will be at the practice field except for the Front Ensemble, who will be inside working hard on Part 2.  Also, I will be there by 5:45 so that any section leader who wants to have a sectional beforehand to review sets or music before the rehearsal may do so.

2)  I want to thank everyone again for a great week of Band Camp last week.  The parents who took care of the lunch for the staff all week - it was always plentiful and delicious!  The students worked hard, had great attitudes and were always where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there.  I cannot ask for more!

3)  I am continuing to figure out how to use the new Band app.  It has been a great resource so far.  We will definitely be talking about ordering decals and signs for those who want them based on the interest shown through the chat from the app.  As I learn how to organize conversations and how to better utilize all of the options for the app, I believe it can become an even more useful tool than even the chat and calendar functions that we already use.

Announcements 7/21/19

Band Camp week is here!  Be sure to get plenty of rest, eat right, and stay hydrated.  This is such an important week to get a lot of work done so that we are as prepared as we can be starting the year.  Remember that our first performance of the year is the second week of school at the Jamboree, so we need everyone there this week.  We get so much done this week that it is so hard to catch up if you miss.

Although there will be a lot of work to be done this week, the leadership team will help bring the fun as well!  They have arranged some theme days to help keep the week a blast. Here are the theme days for the week:

Monday - Manic Mismatch Monday.  Treat it like a normal Monday where you leave the house not knowing that your socks don't match and neither does anything else.

Tuesday - Tie-Dye Tuesday.  Come up with your most tie-dye of tie-dye outfits to show off your bright colors.

Wednesday - Hawaii/ Water Wednesday.  Wear your favorite Hawaii outfit.  BONUS - from 4-5 pm after Band Camp, we will have our water day with slip-n-slide, water soccer, water balloons, and other activities.  Have your swimsuit ready if you want to join in the fun.

Thursday - Throwback Thursday.  Wear your old band T-shirts or just throwback to your favorite decade outfit.  BONUS - From 6 to 9 pm that night in the cafeteria, we will have game night.  You can bring your favorite board games and snacks and we will have a fun time.

Friday - Section Spirit Friday.  Wear anything that helps your instrument section shine.  BONUS - There will be a Pool Party that night after Band Camp.  Details to follow this week.

See you on Monday at 7 am at the practice field!

Announcements 6/9/19

1)  Our second June rehearsal is this Wednesday from 8-11 am.  Last week went great!  Continue to work on your own with the music and the marching fundamentals we worked on.  Recordings of the music can be found on southgibsonband.blogspot.com (you have to view the web version of the web site on a mobile device.

2)  It's never to early to bring water to the band room.  If you ever see water on sale, I encourage you to pick up some and deliver it to the band room so that we always have a supply for the students to use throughout the marching season.

3)  Later this summer we are looking at building our props for the field show.  Right now we are looking for donations of 2x4 lumber, 1/2 inch plywood, and screws to build to the props.  If you know of an individual or a business that would be willing help us out with this, please let me know!
